What is a nice portable gun that can use for sniping from a roof top, can be used as a support, could be shot from a van/truck and is below $400? 2  out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

I know i am going to get some crap for this but if you want a good gun that call do all of that for under $400 i would say a SKS would be your best bet. Now before i get a bunch of shit, hear me out. A full auto is out of the question due to the price, you'll pay out the ass for a non police pre-ban full auto! And a Semi auto AK-47 is great when it comes to magazine capacity but contrary to popular belief its crap for accuracy at moderate to far ranges...dont believe me...copy and paste this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6BpI3xD6h0
With all that being said the availability of surplus SKS's combined with vast ammounts of ammo available every where and the fact that you can pick up a good one for $200...you can't beat it. Would it be my first choice as my main weapon....nope. But if i had to fill the requirements you want with the price restrections you have then i would take the $400 get a SKS for $200 and a shit load of surplus ammo with the left over money.

Where is a website where you can see about the SKS? Otherwise, I think I might get it. Do you find this valuable?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SKS here is general infor about it....for prices you can go to gunbroker.com and just type in SKS...that should give you a idea of prices. If i was you though i would go to a gun show, they are plentiful and cheap! And unlike gunbroker you can buy one right then and there Do you find this valuable?

Hmm, where I live, it is winter which accordingly means not very many gun shows, if any. Do you find this valuable?

an SKS is a nice gun but I prefer the AK to the SKS though. You get more ammo and if you know how to shoot an ak you can hit your target dead on at 150 yards I have before on numerous occasions but I've seen the same thing accomplished with the SKS. the good thing about the SKS you have a collapsable stock making it better for CQ battles than the AK, but you should have a CQ weapon already. I have a .40 cal Smith and Wesson Semi-Auto(four extra clips fully loaded) and a .38 special revolver( three speed loaders) I have a 20 Gauge remington model 870 express with a shortened( not sawed off bought) barrel and an elongated tube no rifle yet but I'm changin' that in two to three months and yes it will be an AK. If you go to most gun dealers you can pick up a Mossburg 500 for under $300. 12 gauge ammo. is cheep and easy to find. You can also find new and used pistols for $300 and less. I purchased a new Jennson 9 this week for $160. It is a 9 mm. with 2 - 13 round mags. If you can find one the M 1 garand is a great weapon. Its a 30 - 06, ( that can be found any were ), accurate, and incredibly sturdy, its only draw back is it only holds 8 rounds in its clip, but it is fast to reload. You can also find .22 rifles for $200 or less good in a pinch. Do you find this valuable?

Gun shows (and dealers) are a great place for variety and instant gratification, but if you want deals check out pawnshops and/or local "trading post newspapers" (some places call them "penny traders" but in any case you can find them at grocery stores - and they're free news papers). People hawk all kinds of guns and stuff at pawn shops, and it's on sale cheap. For what you'd pay for a new gun you may or may not be satisfied with, you could walk out of a pawnshop with an excellent gun that's as good as new AND some useful military/hunting surplus (gun cleaning kits, knives, mess kits, etc). If you see something you like in a "penny trader", and decide to buy from someone posting something there, do some research about the weapon (the insides and outsides) - and THEN go check it out. If the person acts hesitant to break the gun down for you so you can check it out before money exchanges hands - tell them "deal's off", and go elsewhere. Good weapons to check out would be old WWII rifles (like the M 1 Garand DaveBall mentioned) b/c they would nearly all have a mount for a bayonet (which you might be able to get when purchasing the weapon), plus most have stocks that are solid wood with a metal butt for skull cracking. You'd essentially be getting a firearm, club, and spear. In any case if you go used, make sure you can tell if the weapon is in good condition as if your life depended on it - b/c it might (zombies or no zombies). 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
