Here is a radio clip from CBC circa, 1958. A NY salesman urging folks to buy bomb shelters. Check it out. It will make you laugh and wonder, how the Cold War really felt to the public. Some of us weren't alive for very much of it let alone remember it. All we know is what we read. Good chance to learn. Think of radiated mutant zombies in NY while the US lauches it's first artificial sattelite!
