It'd probably be better to try and restore the original wood stock before you replace it with a fiberglass one. Sure you'll drop some weight but it isn't really going to improve the accuracy of an old surplus rifle much. Plus I can't really justify droping $100+ on a replacement stock for a rifle that only cost me $60....but thats just me.

Here's where ATI comes in, they have some OK stocks for Enfields, Mosin Nagants, Mausers, SKSs, and on and on. They'll run you about $50-$80 and while they're probably not on the same level as a choat stock...ask yourself, do I really need a $100+ stock on a rifle thats only going to shoot a minute of barn door no matter what I do?

You can order them from Cabelas and Midwayusa. They've also got a list of dealers on their site.

With all that said, I can't stress this enough, TRY TO SAVE THE WOOD!! You'd be very surprised what you can do with some sand paper and a bottle of Birchwood Casey.

now that i think about it- i dont know how thoes stocks i posted would hold up when using a bayonet on a M1 carbine,
the wood stocks are made for high impact combat..
maybe the para version would be good for a zombie invasion if you want to pay 1000++ for that rifle i would rather have a CETME rifle 600 dollars in 7.62 can be found lots of places
ill stick to my higly illegal remington 597 .22 LR great for the Z day

lol, are you in Californistan? If so, you have my condolences.
If not, i don't even want to know what you did to make a 597 illegal(have an idea though)....keep an eye out for the BATF they don't really go for the "But its for the zombies" defense.

I am going to go bat sh!t crazy very soon. Wooden stocks were never considered "High Impact." Wood was the toughest material at the most cost effective price at the time. I am a big supporter of wood. I love it. BUT it can warp if not properly cared for and stored. By it warping the stock is ruined and, depending on how bad it is, the weapon too. It can spinter and split just like composites, and plastics crack and break. So the trade offs are up to you. Less weight and higher kick, more weight and less kick. And regardless if you buy cheap you get cheap... Wood or composites/plastics....
MY Two Cents.

www.gunbroker.com and local gun stores. In any case you'll need to find a store to do the transfer anyway.

Check out HK G3s and HK91s as well, they're all basically the same rifle with the HK91 being a purpose built civilian model while the other 2 will be modified military rifles. CETMEs will be the cheapest though simply because they don't have the all mighty HK name attached to them.

You can get a gunsmith to thread your barrel for you. I think in some states threaded barrels are a nono but im not sure as I only bother to learn the laws of mine and the ones bordering me.
Then find a class 3 dealer that deals in suppressors. You'll have to get the local chief LEO to sign some papers saying he doesn't mind you having a suppressor, jump through some other hoops, pay a one time $200 tax +whatever the cost of the suppressor is and you're done. (The details vary and it doesn't necessarily have to be the chief LEO, but that’s basically it)

If you're in CA, IL, NY, or MA just forget about it and go pick up a 91/30 for $50.

When is an old rifle not old, what's the cut off date?
We started talking about WW2 bolt actions and ended up at AK47s and HK91's.

I probably will resort to weapons made pre-vietnam war era as a last resort. But making WW2 weapons better sounds like a good reason to get a thommy gun, the only firearm that is pre-vietnam that I'd frequently resort to. But then again, with the AA-12 and Kriss on the horizon, maybe I won't resort to it. Do you find this valuable?
