Couple of nit picks. First 3qt hyrdo pack will last you, Oh, a day if you dont piss the whole time. Second energy bars are the number one stupid thing to bring regarding survival, They are mainly carbohydrates and fiber, which basicly acomplishes two things, a suger crash after a couple of hours, and getting more dehydrated because of the fiber. Third, assault rifles are by definition automatic. That said you struck gold with the socks and boots, theres a marine saying that basicly states that a man can be soaked head to ankel in freezeing shit and if his feet are warm and dry hell still march. I personaly bring atleast one pair of socks a day. But Im a little psyco in that sense. One for every two days will more than cover you. 4 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

the point of this thread is that your not gunna need the food because your not going to F$#ing Egypt most of these fools are running to the nearest cosco/wal-mart the energy bars are to give you substance in case they get hungry between the front door of they're house and the door to your SUV. also the cliff bars are a specific brand of energy bar consisting of "Hippi food" so there is only natural sugars and carbs. we ate em in Iraq all the time because they are the best survival food/ energy bar on the market.

Yeah I have to agree, were talking about an Urban situation. In the first months of infection food and water shouldn't be a huge problem. But thats if you plan to be moving around. If your holding up in a building this can't be your only resource.

yeah but the point of this thread was what to pack in your "BUG OUT BAG" hence the reason for packing lite. for a home base survival kit your looking more at the canned goods, cases of bottled water and generator, maybe even looking at a private well with a hand pump backup and a fortified greenhouse with artificial sunlite or thick Plexi-glass windows. i have designed fallout shelters for some people that get into the really long term stay but we will save such multi-million dollar shelters for the non-survivors who need such things to get by.

It doesn't matter if the sugar and carbs are natural you will still crash and they will still suck down water in your body. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

you guys are loosing the point! this isnt about energy bars vs MRE's & shyte. listen again you do not need 300lbs of gear for a "BOB". carry food for the day and water for the day if your on the move. when you find a good place to holdup, start your stockpile. "one day of food is three days of walking" if you eat good and keep in shape you can subsist on moss & treebark if needs be but one thing you cant afford is to move slow! 2 out of 2 found this valuable. I'm sorry for all you he-man types. I'm married with 3 stepdaughters and they did not get a BOB they got an LBV (load bearing vest ) This vest had a small first aid kit, a knife, 2 ways to start a fire, a poncho, a space blanket, and any non thirst making bar they wish to carry. This still left a lot of room in a normal vest for flashlights, TP ( hey I'm old) Dry chicken broth , You get the idea. All in a vest once on never off. Then your pack is just a plus. A cheap copy is any fishing vest. With a glow stick in a vest if you get lost in the middle of the night you get found.4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

"a human can go 3days before dehydration kills you in the desert and you have 2-1/2 weeks before you die of hunger take trail mix or small amount of canned foods worry about water shelter and LIVE TO EAT NOT EAT TO LIVE"People can fast for around 3 months, they just drink alot of juices, milk, and other liquids that provide everything that they need. Just a random fact there. 00mace: Like Alicestar put so well (summarizing) "these bags are light packs and are not your complete survival kit including your canned foods and spare tire for your car." Cliff bars will keep you going for a long time and are great between meals when you are running around and don't have time to sit down and make yourself a 3 course lunch. They provide what your body is going to be using up when exerting yourself. They do have about 20g of sugar in each one, about as much as a can of soda, but it isn't enough to bring you up and down a lot when you are on the go. Just the opinion of a hardcore backpacker/rock climber who wouldn't know how to sustain himself on the go! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Sorry for the little MRE vs energy bar rant... couldn't contain myself.Wouldn't a knife be very handy in a BOB, even if not for killing? I also like to keep paracord and about 40ft of ducktape in my bag because things always need securing and tying together. As Legion said, TP is something I think should be in every BOB as it has multiple purposes (wiping, tinder, blowing nose, stuffing into things, putting between metal object in pack to prevent sound). "Sorry for the little MRE vs energy bar rant... couldn't contain myself.spraymachine: as with all weapons i keep my knife on my persons. i forgot about the 550 cord though and the tape, its attached to my L.B.E. so its not in my pack but thats a matter of preference. TP on the other hand is something that im sure you will find in any structure your breach so im not sure its BOBworthy 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

On the tape Idea, in my camping gear/vest almost any flat surface is wrapped with tape. When I'm camping, no one trying to kill me, I use bright orange duct tape alot. If i drop my lighters or flashlights it is easy to see. TP in my vest is just because I'm too lazy to open my pack each time when on the move, and sometime after " Breakfast Surprise " I can be in some what of a hurry. Wish I would f known anbout the Cliff Bars, I would of bought stock in the company.

Energy bars are in general a bad idea. Meant more for a power breakfast than real camping. If you want something that will actually keep you going (not to mention aid in repairing your muscles that get damaged by all that exercise) try beef jerky, or dried fruit, or even raw ramen noodles if you seriously need all those carbs. 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
