Mar 7 2008, 6:42 PM EST Has anyone thought of how the stench of zombies would affect survivors? 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Mar 25 2008, 1:28 PM EDT They don't rot so they don't stink very little decay occurs because the bacteria either is killed by the virus (my idea) or they avoid zombies all togther. Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 1 2008, 8:52 AM EDT Its not only bacteria that decays things, there are also natural elements such as wind, water, sand, heat, etc.. Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 1 2008, 5:55 PM EDT the natural elements do damage but mostly they affect the bacteria grow in negative or postive ways. Decay causes smell anyway becasue the bacterial by-products the same idea is behind Body Odor in humans your pits don't stink the bacteria living there does Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Stench
Apr 1 2008, 6:00 PM EDT They do eventually rot away, i think in the Zombie Survival Guide or WWZ it says 5-6 years for one zombie to rot. I know that this is just what Max Brooks guessed because there are no zombies yet, but some bacteria could evolve to eat zombie flesh Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Stench
Apr 3 2008, 3:15 PM EDT Ture they do decay but that time period is why the stench is very weak and should not be really a factor. Trust me you'll hear a zombie before you would smell him. For proof there is a sample of WWZ where a blind man says the zombies have a oderless smell. Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 14 2008, 9:22 PM EDT youve forgotten the most obvious thing! when you die you stop controlling your bowels. and even if the zeds dont all shit their pants before the change occurs, i doubt they'll be concerned about dropping their pants to take a shit after a day of eating people. RE: Stench
Apr 23 2008, 9:57 AM EDT I'd have a small bottle of spearmint oil or peppermint oil with me just in case. (peppermint is better) We used it for some body recovery operations in the military. When you have a "ripe" corpse near you, it's a very unforgettable and nausating smell. To help keep your stomach from doing the "cha-cha", you'd put some of the oil on your fingertip and then you'd rub the inside's of your nostril's with it. The oil can burn a bit (sometimes a lot) at first, but it effectively masks any other oder's. I don't know if there's anything better out there for this, as I did this type of work a couple decades ago, so I'm sure someone's come up with something better by now. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

Apr 23 2008, 10:09 AM EDT Another plus for the build an island idea or meeting in a coastal town, atleast some of the time time the wind will come off the water. Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 23 2008, 2:32 PM EDT I have not, but that is definitely something to think about. It seems like eventually you would get used to it, but maybe not. Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 23 2008, 2:34 PM EDT That is a great idea! In the tanneries they use peppermint leaves to help cover some of the smell, so that would make sense. Do you find this valuable? |

Jun 6 2008, 11:28 AM EDT We would probably stink as much as the zombies, since there would be no water, and no time to think about washing Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Stench
Jun 23 2008, 1:43 AM EDT Your all forgetting something very important. Zombies arn't DEAD. They should be affected by a virus of some time, not technically killing them, just "altering" them. Their flesh will not decay, the cells will be "alive" per say. But this is only imformation i've gathered from the fiction that surrounds zombies (as it is with everyone else since none exist to prove anyones points). The zombies generally wont smell all that bad. On the other hand, we will. As stated above... we wont have ANY time to worry about personal hygiene on the run. Our hair will be matted with sweat and our body will reak. Living next to a fresh water source is the best sollution to this (yay for hot springs baths?) Do you find this valuable? |

Jun 27 2008, 11:36 PM EDT Yeah I'm pretty sure they would stink pretty badly. I mean... I stink after a short while... You probably do to... They never take showers... Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Stench
Jun 30 2008, 11:23 AM EDT Even if the zombies themselves weren't rotting, you would have the smell of the decaying flesh they have eaten, and don't forget the lovely smell that will come from the realease of the body fluids after the inital death, before becoming a zombie.... Do you find this valuable? |

Jun 30 2008, 1:24 PM EDT Yeah... my father embalms bodies for a living. I've visited him at work and the smell is absoulutedly horrid. Do you find this valuable? |

Jul 12 2008, 11:06 AM EDT There is no way to cope with the smell of millions of rotting bodies, you can try to create something simillar, but there really is no way. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Stench
Jul 12 2008, 11:39 AM EDT None of us really know if they'll be rotting or not. But typical fictional representations of Zed's say that they're dead and reanimated. Basically shells. That would mean, to me at least, that they're rotting and walking. Not altered, pure versions of their former cells with eaten out sections of their flesh. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Stench
Jul 23 2008, 3:23 PM EDT Eh, wouldn't affect me much. I have trouble smelling as is, and I also figured a way to block out smells by simply not breathing through the nose. mouth-breathing all-the way. Also, thin (sometimes wet) fabric is good at blocking some smells. Mostly, I would rate the stench up with walking in sewers and getting sprayed by a skunk. Past the initial "woah! that stinks!" you learn to ignore it. Do you find this valuable? |
