Floating Island
Apr 10 2008, 6:16 PM EDT Lake Superior has a surface area of 31,820 square miles (82,413 km²)—which is larger than South Carolina. It has a maximum length of 350 miles (563 km) and maximum breadth of 160 miles (257 km). Its average depth is 483 feet (147 m) with a maximum depth of 1,333 feet (406 m). The largest lake freighter is 729 feet long, 39 feet high with a capacity of 26,600 short tons. Several of those not only give you an island, they give you a moving colony with unlimited access to fresh water and food. 13 out of 13 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Floating Island
Apr 10 2008, 9:03 PM EDT I like the numbers and being moble. There was some ideas like this under "Island". I live near salt water so water is still an issue. I had thought about bardges. Lots of flat area to put soil and grow things. You would have to be able to anchor in a bay safe from winter storms. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Floating Island
Apr 11 2008, 12:54 AM EDT id pick lake superior too, i based my Z fiction story "the outer island colony" on an island on the Apostle Island chain off of wissconsin, another idea to keep in mind and since your mobile, if you drift near canada, most of the canadian coastline there is Natinol forests and wildlife preserves, you could send out hunting partys on little boats from the main group and go get bear, elk caribou moose and deer, thatd feed your population, plus fish of course Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Floating Island
May 1 2008, 5:52 PM EDT there is one thing that could be a problem, i have read that the water in the great lakes is pretty polluted. Without proper means of distilling the water, it cold be a death sentence. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Floating Island
May 1 2008, 7:47 PM EDT The huge ships can make their own water, depending on the type. The main down fall is having enough people to secure it. The crew will know the hiding places better than you. Do you find this valuable? |
