Body Weight in a Post Apocalyptic World
Apr 19 2008, 1:07 PM EDT
Another issue to think about is total body mass. After society collapses, the resulting food shortage will hit the larger survivors the hardest. More body mass = more calorie expenditure = need more food. If you are carrying over 200 lbs, or have 20+% body fat, then Z-day will hit your fairly hard. Sure, you’ll lose weight fast in a starvation state, and you could logically use this as your Plan B, but this type of dramatic weight loss is devastating on the body. Lower body weight (and lower body fat%) will do the following: Increase your strength-to-weight ratio: Zombies can’t climb, but neither can a lot of big guys. If doing a pull-up onto a fire escape lets you evade the legions of undead, being at a healthy body weight will help greatly. Increase your endurance: If you are a 240lb man with 30% body fat, and try to run 2 miles, it’s the same thing as. 240lb man @ 30% bf 216lb man @ 20% bf, running with 25lbs. 192lb man @ 10% bf, running with 50lbs. The level of extra work needed to move useless body fat is huge. The 192lb 10%er has a massive advantage over the 30%er, as if he “dropped that 50lb plate” his total speed and endurance is incomparably greater. Decrease your chance of terror-induced heart attack: Extra weight carries a great load of stress on the cardio-vascular system. Throw in some running and fighting, and blood pressure will sky rocket. Throw in a good old fashioned walk-around-the-corner-face-to-face-with-a-zombie, and you have the perfect combination for a massive heart attack. Decrease caloric demands: Less weight = less energy = less food. Plain and simple. Like the 192lb 10%er and his 50lb plate (wad of fat). If he drops the plate (fat), his energy expenditure drops with it. Body Weight in a Post Apocalyptic World, a group will not do well if it has multiple high-calorie-demand individuals. Very nice post, I like the info here. Also, just to give you guys the other side of the sad story. I am 5'11" and 150 lbs. I am at 8% body fat but that does not mean I am healthy or in total shape. Truth be told, I can barely run a mile anymore. After graduating college, I lost all interest in physical activity and my endurance/strength has paid for it severly. Six pack is useless in a survival situation if you can't run/fight. Thanks for the wake up call, I think I am gonna start jogging again atleast and maybe hit the iron a little, to up the mass. I am a good deal overweight. Actually Im a big fat fatty, But I am not one that makes excuses. I never tried to lose weight honestly. I had some heart surgery in early March (unrelated to weight I had a bad arrhythmia that nearly killed me when I got active. I thought it was just a flutter becuase I was fat.) So they burned a piece of my heart out the size of a quarter. Since then i feel better than ever. I am nowtrying to lose weight since it doesnt feel like exercise is going to kill me. ( and nearly did when I took the correctional officer test)

go slow at first a lot of stretching and circuit training. at this stage you will want to work out your whole body in one workout atleast three times a week for 4 weeks then step it up. check out maxims workout guide.

You're forgetting one thing however. In nature, the biggest, meanest animal usually becomes the leader of the pack, therefore is entitled to more food. You bring up a good point, but in a world where only the strong survive, being bigger could actually be an advantage.

Overweight? Yeah. If anything, I'm underweight. 5'9"-ish and about 110lbs. Yeah, I can run a mile in 7 mins tops and 50 yards in 6 to 7 seconds, but I get tired so friggin' easily. I mean, if you asked me if I wanted to play basketball after running a mile, I'd faint (well, more like...say no). I got no endurance whatsoever. Ok, I got a little bit, but not enough to bike up a hill with zombies at my tail. Heck, I could never even if there was no zombies.Well, maybe that adrenaline hormone will kick in once the dead rise. in a post apocaplyptic enviroment you should only be eating enough to survive and conserve the rest. we aren't animals that can gorge on one meal and not eat for a week while burning calories then gorge again. thats not how our bodyies are set up.

"in a post apocaplyptic enviroment you should only be eating enough to survive and conserve the rest. we aren't animals that can gorge on one meal and not eat for a week while burning calories then gorge again. thats not how our bodyies are set up. "That's all a fine and dandy concept when the supermarkets are still open. But the grim reality is that once the shit hits the fan, primal instinct will take over in a lot of cases. Give it two weeks, and most people (the survivors anyway) will turn into animals. Only in groups with strict discipline (and this is harder than you might think) will adopt a more sane and rational method of distributing food and supplies. Every man for himself with the rest. foraging and raiding small towns like in the land of the dead. scattered farms will still have crops growing even if there are no farmers left to tend the fields for maximum produce output. canned goods and mre's can still be found at plentyof locations, plus hunting and fishing will provide a lot of food once you get good at it. i suggest you learn how to set snares and trout lines there are plenty of ways to find food and eat insects. if you are catering to a large group of people then it will be harder to keep foraging up for long but if you are by yourself then survival in that aspect may be easier but probably not safer from ambush and attack. Hell_Razor's description ironically sounds like Lord of the Flies. I shudder at the thought. In response to koolkat, that probably won't be a problem for me. My it's in my culture to eat exotic foods like insects and amphibians. Do you find this valuable? |

1. Rural populations will doubtless have a larger survival rate. This means that there will be a proportionately high number of survivors with skills in agriculture. i.e. there should be a good amount of food.2. There is a massive amount of long-life food already stored all over the civilised world. 3. As someone has said, there will still be crops growing in fields, and depending on how zombification occurs, there could be farm animals alive as well. Do you find this valuable? |

I'm at 197lbs, and I'm 6'4 in height. Thankfully I'm of good build so I don't slouch or anything. I exercise to stay fit, eat healthier than my peers, engage in parkour around the woods on my property with and without gear on, I practice martial arts and I'm very confident that my 197lbs of mean_GrEEn_fighting_machine isn't going to slow me down or cause me a heart attack Beating people down for food? I've been held at meat cleaver-point for food*, and I'd do the same if I was desperate enough...*See my profile and read the Relationship Status box. Do you find this valuable? |

About 300 lbs and 6'3" and drive the salesmen nuts when I buy a suit, waist is much too small for the chest, at least by their standards. Don't run, bum knees, hips, and back, but do play with red-hot iron, hammers, and anvils.
