RE: gasmask??
Apr 24 2008, 11:14 AM EDT Hey, we did it in basic. I didn't have too much trouble. But if anyone has any sort of respiratory condition like asthma, then steer clear of a protective mask. Like every piece of equipment it has its advantages and disadvantages. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: gasmask??
Apr 24 2008, 1:02 PM EDT I must of missed something, wouldn't be the first time. Why are we wear a gas mask in a non-gas situation? If it is for zombie splatter would a splash guard face shield work better? Do you find this valuable? |

RE: gasmask??
Apr 24 2008, 3:13 PM EDT It's not just for splatters. Let's not forget the sheer amount of dead and decaying bodies that can cause a cesspool of insects and disease. If I had to wade my way through a plaza filled with the corpses of partially eaten people, I'd rather be wearing a protective mask than a face shield. But it's like I said, every piece of equipment has its advantages and disadvantages. Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 24 2008, 8:21 PM EDT "yeah, now try breathing through that same straw while your running from a pack of rabies infected pitbulls!!!!!!!"lol... I breathed through two straw while using a Stair master when training for high altitude mountaineering. It is hard as hell and feels like you aren't breathing at all. Your lungs start burning and such, I can't imagine running with a gas mask on. Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 24 2008, 11:00 PM EDT We have a couple of unissued WWII gas masks. The problem is they used rubber and with age they fail to seal now. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: gasmask??
Apr 24 2008, 11:09 PM EDT When air born T.B. was on the rise some of our Med units had a filter mask kind of like what they use for painters. I don't know if it would cut the smell, but you would still be able to fire your weapon. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: gasmask??
Apr 24 2008, 11:20 PM EDT Unless the virus/bacteria/parasite is airborne, the only reason I can see why you would wear a gasmask would be because of the stench of decaying bodies. If you really want face protection, try a hockey mask or football helmet. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: gasmask??
May 2 2008, 3:28 PM EDT Ski goggles or motocross goggles or somthing like that would be a very good idea to have (protection from blowing dust, blood splatter in eyes, etc) Also a NIOSH approved painting and insectiside respirator for the smell, dust, smoke etc. Doing demolition I wore goggles and a respirator. That way you could choose none, one, or both. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: gasmask??
May 22 2008, 10:56 PM EDT I am required to wear a gas mask during my drills, and they’re perfectly fine. I even did 10 jumping jacks while wearing one in the Camp Legune gas chamber. During our night march, we got ‘gassed’ and had to not only move, but doubletime it, in formation, for about a quarter mile. No problem. The air filter can be switched from right to left (in fact, I have mine rigged for left handed shooter, need to remember to fix that, thanx). The real question is “¿Why?” ¿Why would you wear a bulky gas mask if you didn’t need to? Any zombie virus that’s airborne would be a world-wide pandemic, even transdemic, with less than 000% survivors, and this would be a waste of time. Like getting hit in the head with planetoid, the earth would be doomed, damned, and dead. Dealing with the smell isn’t really a legitimate reason, mainly because it the time frame where you’d have that overpowering smell, you’d be thinking more about surviving yourself, than the sickening smell. You may even benefit from the smell, as it would draw the skin jobs to it, telling you where NOT to go… Or at least, not without overwhelming firepower. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

May 23 2008, 2:14 PM EDT Even if the earth is doomed, Im not just gonna roll over and die. There are other diseases to be worried about as well. How much would it suck to survive the initial outbreak only to die of cholera? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

May 26 2008, 10:21 PM EDT "There are other diseases to be worried about as well."That’s true enough, though realistically you should be more concerned with toxic gas releases (whether incidental to or deliberate because of the outbreak). And many of these gasses are colorless and odorless (two most likely to occur are chloride of ammonia and chlorine gas, the first is from mixing ammonia and bleach, the other from boiling bleach until the chlorine is released). 2 out of 2 found this valuable. May 27 2008, 7:44 PM EDT "true but chlorine gas is heavy and sticks to the ground, so you shouldnt have many problems with that but hydrogen chloride on the other hand floats like a fog and will kill everything it touches ( think the gas form of HCL)" Lighter gasses are actually less dangerous; They go airborne faster. They’ll kill birds, depend on that, but in the short term you’re safe (until the winter rains come; Can’t say what will happen then). The heavier gasses are actually more dangerous; They stay close to the ground longer. Getting higher will help (soldiers in WWI would abandon their trenches, climbing on top until the obvious cloud had dissipated), but you will still have to stay high for 24-48 hours until natural ventilation dissipates the cloud. (Keep in mind that weather patterns will effect this, and not necessarily in ways easily predicted in advance, but generally wind will blow it away while rain will bring it to earth; Either benefits you as a general rule.) 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
