Yeah, an uparmored HUMMV would not be very high on my list of post-apocalypse vehicles.

Hell, uparmored anything would sound like a good idea in theory, but let's not forget that the suspension isn't designed to take the weight you would need. You're better off going hard top, or if you really got the dollars, getting you're vehicle "kidnapper proof".

But raiders do. Anyway, carbon fibre is really light, and it's stronger than steel. And steel can stop bullets, big time.

Hey Hoss, what makes me a retard? I would actually like to know... there's nothing wrong with carbon fibre. And, I never said that all members of the US Military are dumb grunts. I said some are. If you are dumb and in the US Military, please let me know. And I'm really loving the attention here; you seem to be following me around, you and your buddies even making pages in my honour... =D Can a mod restore that 'quickrace hater thread'? It got deleted before I could have a look at it.

The debate about level 4 plate armor... hmm... well, no zombie defense discussion would be complete without one. Well, here we go, let me take a stab at this, but first, let me get in a word about this "Quickrace is insulting ou Troops" thing. As far as the Quickrace debate goes, he voiced his opinion, and banning him for it seems close minded (no offense meant Supersoldier, seriously, I'm just not up for the petition idea). Whether you agree with it or not is another matter entirely. My half brother is in the Army's Mountain Division, aka, his job is heavy ordinance, like the Paladin Mobile Howitzer systems and more conventional weapons like portable mortal launchers and grenade launchers. He's a bright and intelligent man, and I couldn't ask for a better brother, as he shares his experience and time with me, even going so far as to give me his old army boots whenever they give him a new set, since they rock for hiking (He's about 34 or something and I'm going on 20 myself as an Assistant Scout Master in a local boy scout troop). I trust his judgement and opinions on the military as well informed and well thought out, and as he puts it, there *are* some real dimwits in the army; However, no more so then any other job, and at least the troops in the army have the redeeming quality of courage, usually in spades. It takes someone of a good cut to get shot at and return fire: crazy or brave up the wazzu. Quickrace has a point, and it's not unpatriotic. So to summarize, I'm not offended by Quickrace's comments, and if you disagree with them, whatever, deal with it, free country. My half-brother puts himself in the line of fire to protect the rights of people like Quick to say whatever they want, so nobody think you're doing them a service by saying that people shouldn't say things like that because they might be offensive. Just live and let live. Now, for the on topic post, see below this one. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Level 4 plate armor. I'm assuming you meant using some form of heavy metal armor to plate vehicles and turn them into some form of makeshift tank, right? Hmm...Well, there are merits and disadvantages. I'd say it depends on your situation. If the chasis is a big, superstrong one, and the engine is a massive V8 or equivelent in a Ford f150, and you have the materials on hand, then hell yeah, build that crap. Howver, if you're not in this scenario, don't go looking for it. Really, Marine grade Plywood (who suggested that) is probably your best bet. It's everywhere, it's lightweight, if applied in layers, it will repel any zombie attack, especially if you're driving at speed. When reinforced with heavier materiels for reinforcement, like concrete-filled metal rods, braced with 2x4s, layered with sheet metals and bolted directly to the chasis, such armor could repel even a determined human attacker with simple hand weapons like sledgehammers and fire axes (power tools like a chainsaw might get through, however, if they don't break on contact with the pipes reinforcing it). As far as opposing firearms from raiders, bulletproofing any vehicle in a post-zombie enviroment will be exceedingly difficult, and most likely not worth the effort. Most modern vehicles are already bullet resistant to a degree (a rimfire 22 might be stopped by the glass or car door, and pistol rounds might be stopped by the metal engine block). The above-mentioned multilayered plywood armor could definitely stop a few lower calibur bullets, but your greatest defense against raiders is strategy, stealth, and speed. The vehicle should assist your efforts, maybe even lead them, but not to run them single handedly. Hell, a pickup truck with a bed filled with sharpshooters using hunting rifles could serve as a mobile sniper tower for long range firefights, or arm those same men with shotguns and use it as a linebreaker. Armor level should depend on it's role. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Vehicles are designed for a purpose now, and after the zombo-colypse should be retrofitted for specific purposes that correspond with their orginal purpose. If you want a vehicle to transport survivors from place to place quickley, then take a van or truck, add minimal armor to protect against the lucky zombie hickhiker whose arm gets snagged on the chasis, and rip out the seats and install handhold straps in the back for increased transport capacity and you're set. Want a rapid assault/patrol vehicle? Take a truck or family sedan and add on moderate armor, rip out the seats in the back, install some handgrips for increased space and emergency transport capacity, add on a dozer blade (a snow plow attachment should do fine if you got one) and get ready to crash some gates. However, be aware of your means when creating your vehiclular systems. Fuel could be hard to come by, so unless you have a ready stockpile of fuel, aim for smaller, lighter template vehicles and adjust your tactics and contruction projects accordingly. If you can only fuel a small car, use it as transport, add minimal armor and avoid use of it in combat roles. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
