Ben was a very decent leader. He gave everyone a job to do and kept them calm. Yes he got shot in the head in the end but bad things happen to good people. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I remember my brother once mentioned that the killing of Ben was indicitive of the racism that still existed during that time period(late 1960's) the later remake had ben become infected, and he was shot by the survivor girl. Do you find this valuable?

I dont honestly think that in the original his race honestly had anything to do with him getting shot. Think it was really just for the ironic shock value of making it all night against the undead to just get plugged anyway. Romero was told when he made the movie that he was brave to cast a black man in the lead role in a movie made at the that time. Romero responded. " I did not cast a black man. I cast the man that was best for the job and gave the best reading for the part. Just so happens he was black"
