So all we think about is the contents of a Bug Out Bag...
May 1 2008, 11:49 PM EDT | Post edited: May 1 2008, 11:49 PM EDT
Yeah, all we think about are the contents, but what about the actual bag? I was putting together one holding the two bottled waters when I asked myself, "Where am I gonna put these things?"

So can anyone help me look for an ideal pack, bag, or plastic to put our survival stuff in? I mean, you can't just put it in a garbage bag and expect to be the most badass zack hunter out there.

It's gotta be something with maximum capacity and ultralightweight. (is that even a word?)

Use an ALICE pack. you can get them with or without a frame. I removed the frame from mine but had to rig up a metal bar to secure the shoulder straps. They are water resistant, tear resistant, and have plenty of pockets and straps and whatnot. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Alternitively a bergen (military style rucksac) or an Assault Vest. (or both like me, for camp and excursions).

You can easily find both on an army surplus webiste I got mine from surplusandadventure.com

you can get clothes and such as well. good hunting

Well, I think it depends on how long your intending to stay out there, and how much you want to take.

The Bergen is good for main supplys and carrying equipment such as tools, tent, and big stuff, whilst the vest is more for a light, 1 day raid of a village, take what you can carry, and get out. So yeah, see how much it can carry, optimum for long survival is 65ltr at least. (thats without augmenting supplys etc.

go to any military gear site you can find all kinds of assualt packs and specialty rucks. the snipers in our scout platoons like to get the gun rucks and drag bags from blackhawk. there are variations to the alice pack you might want to look at as well. i have two bags i am selling. they are both black one is a camelback mother load the other is a blackhawk 3 day assualt pack with the extra accessory bags. While it's probably best to go military, as others suggested, pretty much any camping/hiking pack in good condition should work. Do you find this valuable?

can anybody state a preference over the new molle packs versus the old alice packs? I know replacing the metal clips with 550 cord was a pain but other than that I can't see how to improve on the alice pack

Upgrade the ALICE shoulder straps and the kidney pad with the MOLLE shoulder straps and waist belt. HUGE difference. right now they are like <$30 on eBay new.

Go civilian.
Depending on the terrain you are slogging through, you can go internal or external frame. Since my home (real home) is mostly mountainous, I would opt for an internal frame. If it were flatter and more open like my current "home", I would opt for an external frame. They have different weight distribution and load balance characteristics.
A standard hiking pack may cost more, but it will be much more comfortable than any ALICE pack, and much more adjustable in most cases.

The new MOLLE rucksacks have two big advantages: the shoulder straps are more comfortable and they have the quick release feature. Other than that, I prefer the old ones. It may be possible to put the quick release straps on an old ALICE pack somehow, but personally I prefer a regular assault pack over both. Truth is, the old and new rucksacks hold a lot more than I mean to carry. Do you find this valuable?

Alice packs are good packs and everybody should have one or more. If you are going to be walking much with it go with one with a frame No reason to pay more then $20 for one either
I don't know how much you are goig to carry but another option are some of the Cammel back packs. I use one of these for my Get Home Bag that I keep in my car

Civilian bags can be a better choice as long as you go with quality ones. I like Kelty packs but have a very nice Eiger Marmot and an old Mt. Smith, Dont fool with low quality junk bags

If you are looking for a good bag it really pays I think to buy a used one because you will save a ton of money. I see LOTS of quality bags with most looking like they got used once or twice if that. Appears that more people buy hiking gear then actually use it and then get rid of it.
I find them at yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores and auctions and most can be bought for less then $20 and I've bought plenty for under $10...My Eiger I paid $5 for.
With prices like this no reason to have a bag that you don't like or to use "cheap" junk

No- but ultra lightweight is....

Many members will suggest ALICE or other surplus packs, personally I would perfer to shellout for a cheap Civilian pack.

You can expect to pay about 100-150 for a low end one but it is money well spent to save you from stopping to rest your aching shoulders and back every half an hour.

Also I suggest you look at getting yourself a camel back which will save space in your pack for more important things.

A bag is where I won't skimp out on more than anything else. I've done 10 mile rucks with a ALICE loaded light, I've done 8-mile rucks with the MOLLE bag loaded heavy, and I've done hikes with civilian bags that numbered about 8 miles, but were not on a path or road the whole way. I'd rate the ALICE lowest, and the civilian bag highest. The frame has horrible hotspots, the padding sucks in all contact zones, and they have a tendency to sag. The MOLLE bag has much better padding and air circulation, and I could even adjust it for my size in some vectors, but it still tended to sag if you hadn't pulled certain straps as tight as you physically could without breaking it. The civvie bag I used, though borrowed, was a mid-ground model (still $200+) and loaded down with camping gear, and way more comfortable than either issued bag. The padding materials were better, and I could fully adjust it to fit me, and it didn't sag on me. I'm also partial to internal frame packs. Do you find this valuable?
