May 22 2008, 11:58 AM EDT Bandit - this is a really good page, and something that everyone intending to lead their group should read. I have a good example of leadership for you if you get the chance to see it. In the HBO series "Band of Brothers" there's a character that goes by the name of "Bull." Bull becomes a Sargent after the Normandy invasion, and is given charge over a group of new recruits. He stands up for them (respectfully) against a fellow soldier who downs his replacements for not being in the D-Day drop. If they need help with something he instructs without putting them down. He also led from the front and not from the safety of the back. As a result, his men went to his aid when Bull got cut off from the retreat. *This is the episode of "Operation Market Garden." If you lead well, and earn peoples respect, you can always count on the people who follow to do everything they can for you. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

May 22 2008, 12:55 PM EDT "I have always thought the i lead you follow approach as the best way to lead a group. If it worked for Nepolean and Washington why not"It works great for military operations - to a point. Napoleon was a brilliant military tactician, but not exactly a people person - and died in exile, alone and quite mad. Washington was a great leader, but he also realized the needs of his men, and suffered with them in dire battle field conditions (like Valley Forge). As a result he was revered and loved by the people. Barking orders will definitely help efficiency, but if the people with you start hating your guts you may find yourself in a poor situation. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I have seen "Band of Brothers" (excellent miniseries, I highly recommend) Yes, there are many examples of good leadership, and there are many examples of bad leadership. And that's about as far as it goes. We can set precedents. It is difficult to teach. We can give a person an example, and tell them that this is the kind of thing that is expected of you. This is the kind of attitude we hail in this society. But to be able to teach someone leadership is next to impossible. We can give him or her all the training we can think of, but it will still come down to him when it's time to make decisions. That being said, observation, and training CAN have an impact on someone who is willing to learn, and is able to comprehend the kinds of impacts a certain course of action will have. May 22 2008, 3:31 PM EDT A group trying to survive will listen to the one who seems the most knowledgeable and most prepared and that will be us so i belive that once you have there attention you need to show them that you are not above them. So them that you sacrifice fro the group they should too. Washington suffered with his men while Bonapart stood in mist of battel charging ahead. YOU need that Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Any suggestions?
Sunday, 7:21 PM EST The pirates used a democracy they voted on important issues like where to raid or resuply, crew were voted into posistions Bosun Captain ect. and then got more votes 3 for captain 2 first mate If I remember. The captain was the millitary leader in all situations but could be replaced by a 3/4 majority. And punishment always came from the bosun who acted as judge so the captain put you on report but the bosun actualy gave you the lash or whatever he considered apropriate. The captain only punished officers. Its the only working millitary demoracy I could find. Do you find this valuable? |
