Who will Drive
May 8 2008, 1:59 PM EDT Shelleybear I have a few questions. 1 who will navigate the freighters, its not easy. 2 What about fuel, and food. You will have to know were the right ports are for fuel. Food will be hard also most stores are inland. You may have to travel miles to find a grocery store. And to do that you will need smaller boats to go ashore. then theres break-downs, and weather most of lake Superior freezes up and will crush a freighters hull. It may work for a short term, if you can find people to operate the ship.. 2 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

If you're serious about this...
Jun 8 2008, 3:00 PM EDT Firstly, take a boating coarse (a local JC should have something) and pay SPECIAL ATTENTION to the navigations class. (I'm a boatswain's mate, and I can't navigate by the stars.) Choose your course, and stick to it like your life depnds on it, becasue it does; Ending up a little north of most northern lattitude islands is ok, as the prevailing ocean currents will push you south. (This is not a hard and fast rule; LEARN TO READ THE CHARTS!!!) Going ship-to-shore; You can load up about a dozen or so smaller boats, ranging from one-man kyaks to 20+/- foot cabin cruisers (cut out the cabin to reducxe weight, but do so carefully, as this will effect ballast) to put over the side when you get within about 5 miles; How close you can get will be effected by ship's draft, but get as close as you can WITHOUT GOING AGROUND. As a general rule, you should assume you're in the high tide water, and stay in water not less than 2X's ship's current draft. (Therefore, if you're drawing 12' 3" fore, 13'4" aft, stay in water at least 26' deep.) Drop the anchor IF YOU CAN WORK THE GEAR; Otherwise, drop a very heavy object over the amidships tied CAREFULLY to a heavy line ("Hawser" at least 6" around), with a anchor watch oon the line (skin jobs AND pirates can climb upt the line). Anchor watch should be "armed" with a saw to cut the line in case of danger. Put over one boat of very heavily aremd, aromeord, and slightly pychotic survivors to scout the immedaite area. Food, fuel, etc will be addresed after some more due consideration, but you're in trouble in general. Do you find this valuable? |
