Gas masks
May 12 2008, 9:52 PM EDT Some tips for gas masks are to get one that is able to adjust the filter to either side. An example is the US army's m40 promask. The filter is able to be attached to either the left or right side to allow shooters of either hand to fire accuratley with it. And before you run out and get a mask, try one on and do a little jumpin up and down, breathing can get difficult. A key note to firing with the mask on, rotate the weapon. Old school flak jackets are available at surplus stores, they are designed to stop shrapnel, and if in good shape are suppsoedly able to stop a 9mm bullet. Since they cant stop bullets they are better left behind. Modern body armor, like the Interceptor body armor (IBA) gets its bullet proof properties from the SAPI (Small Arms Protective Insert) plates inside. Without the plates dont bother. Keep in mind as well that the plates are pretty much a one time use. If they take a round, the plate loses a lot of protective abilities(they crumble). If you have access to sapi plates or somehow own a few, get a plate carrier(these are very very easy to find, just look online or at a surplus or even sporting store) and wear it over a leather jacket. Its much lighter without all the added kevlar padding. Invest is Gortex boots. They breathe well, dont need to be broken is as much as traditional leather and they take a lot of abuse. Gortex. it comes in cammo, its waterproof, its an extra layer of protection. Need I say more. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Gas masks
Jul 10 2008, 3:49 AM EDT Having studied, owned and used gas masks for a good 3+ years I think I have license to say the following. They're overrated. Unless you're gas mask savvy, going through chemical warfare or are traversing sewers extensively during your escape, do yourself a favor and don't bring one. To the untrained user, they pose more of a threat than an asset. I could go on for hours about that, but it's best that you use that time to train and prepare. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. RE: Gas masks
Jul 10 2008, 10:53 AM EDT About the only thing here I seen that is correct is that M-40’s (and MCU-2P as well) can be switched between left- and right-hand shooters. Interceptors have Kevlar inserts rated to 7.62MM; The Small Arms Protection Inserts (SAPI) Plates are required only to stop large rounds (despite the name). Allegedly, they can stop ONE .5Ø caliber round (then they shatter). ¿Overrated? Argueable, I suppose, but I’m pretty sure after reading this, most people can be “gas mask savvy: 1. Use a new filter. 2. Shave. Even if you can’t meet both criteria, if you find one, take it. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Gas masks
Jul 10 2008, 9:55 PM EDT Re-thinking my position: I'd have to agree with you on the criteria. Also, if I might add a couple tips for comfort and care: 3. Adjust the straps so the mask is comfortable on your face, but make sure there's still a good seal between the gas mask and your face. You'll have adequate protection against noxious odors [if you have a non-exhausted filter], fluids won't easily penetrate the rubber and you'll look fairly intimidating to raiders. 4. When not in use, put your gas mask in a rubberized bag so dust and gunk don't collect inside the gas mask. It sucks having what's outside be inside your mask. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. RE: Gas masks
Jul 11 2008, 5:23 AM EDT RE: 3. ...and once you have them adjusted properly, take a few inches of electrical tape to hold it firmly in place. (That was actually reccomended to me by a Senior Cheif; I thought it was against regualations, but he shot that down quick.) RE: 4. I keep mine in a normal canvas bag, and it does get dusty, but that seems to be all. I'm not going to say don't use a rubberized bag if you got one (I'll leave that to someone who knows better than I, and I suspect they'll say it's fine), but a rubberized bag is not mission-critical. 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
