May 30 2008, 3:25 AM EDT Actually, fire would be a better signal for this; During the day, the smoke would be visible much further away, and at night the flames could still be seen. Someone will be quick to mention that everyone will likely have fires going all the time; But fires in contained environments (fireplaces/woodstoves) generally don’t have smoke visible all that far away. Exposed fires, especially those with accelerants, will be far easier to see. Just a thought. I could be wrong… AustonWass, that is a concern, but if we lived our lives I perpetual abject terror, the species would die anyways; Better to fly a flage and get some sort of potential help, than to try and stick our heads in the sand and hope it doesn’t effect us (or, as I prefer to say, “Better to die trying, than to try dying”). 2 out of 2 found this valuable. "I suspect you're overeacting a bit; Safety in numbers means if there are any other survivors out there, they'll come to you and settle in for the seige. It's a concern, yes, but an overstaded one for the most part. Do you find this valuable? |

Jun 11 2008, 1:41 AM EDT yes, there is the "safety in numbers" bit. There is always going to be the occasional person who will want to come and forcefully take your stuff, but chances are that the passerby will be relieved at the sight of another survivor. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Controlled releases of smoke would work during the day, but at night, I don't think visual signals are the best thing to use. Do you find this valuable? |

I could put up a “I have food and supplies, only one person here” sign, and maybe it’s true when I put it up. But then a few days later, I end up locking a bunch of skin jobs in there and walking away. You see the sign, think “¡WUT THERE’S FOOD HERE!” and discover that yes- Dinner has been served. May I suggest- A flag system. Each day of the week and each month of the year has a specific flag (actually a pennant) attached to it (the months can follow the majority color of the birthstone, the days will still need a specific color). April, for example, is Diamond, so a white pennant (torn sheet) over say a Friday pennant (Red, let’s say). Now, if it’s a Friday in April, and I don’t see white over red, I know there’s something WRONG there, whatever the paint may say. Do you find this valuable? |
