RE: Personal Protective Gear
May 25 2008, 9:54 AM EDT Bearing in mind that I'll only be wearing this when I have to, If I'm going into a place I know for certain is zombie less I'll only wear the combats, boonie hat, and combat vest. The other gear is for bite protection. also I meant motocross rather than motorcycle. Do you find this valuable? |

May 25 2008, 12:01 PM EDT "Head: Snowboarding Goggles, Boonie Hat, Bandanna around nose and mouth. Is the boonie hat to keep zombie birds from crapping on your head or are you going for an image here? Why not just go with a nomex balaclava which will provide more complete protection than a boonie. I think that the motorcycle body armor would probably be enough considering you're protecting yourself against bites, not small arms fire - so the ceramic plates wouldn't really be necessary. Also, "Combat vests" are pretty heavy, not very flexible and really only protect your midsection. I think a good motorcycle jacket ontop of a nomex assault/flight suit would be enough. As for gloves, I'd go with a good quality riding glove - the type with the carbon fiber knuckle padding - or a pair of nomex flight gloves. Nomex is a pretty tough material that, while not protecting you completely will atleast minimize any injuries you might get. also, it's fire resistant so would be useful if you make the mistake of trying to fight zombies with a flamethrower or something. What exactly do you mean by combat shirt/jacket? Do you find this valuable? |

May 25 2008, 12:03 PM EDT "Head: Snowboarding Goggles, "Ohyeah, and for the snowboarding goggles, once you start running around they'll fog up really fast - even the fog resistant ones. Best bet is a pair of Oakley M-frames. Do you find this valuable? |

May 26 2008, 11:48 AM EDT I'm hiding out in the forest, so I'm going for a camo aproach. and a combat shirt/jacket, is just another name for the shirt/jackets worn by the armed forces. the reason for the boonie hat, is just to protect me from the sun, whilst keeping the rest of my face free if I need it. RE: Personal Protective Gear
May 26 2008, 12:26 PM EDT Its actually not too bad of a load out. Im assuming you are going for a full set of bdu's and not just the blouse. Keep in mind though that military uniforms are designed for stuff to go over the top of them, not underneath. So wear the your armor over, not under. I don'tknow anything about motorcycle armor though, but it might not really be worth wearing it for the type of protection it offers, and it might be hard to wear with an lbe/lbv over the top. Armor in general is questionable though. Ask yourself what your protecting yourself from, and then look at what your armor is designed for. Are you weighed down by it, does it significantly reduce your range of motion, and does it protect from the likely threats, ie, BITES. Replace the ski goggles with an actual decent set , ess, wileys, etc. Something that seals the eyes yet allows breathing to prevent fog. A neck gator to cover your face, or an actual balaclava to prevent splashing of fluids on you. Good call with the boonie, it helps keep the elements off you, and breaks up your profile better than a standard patrol cap. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Personal Protective Gear
May 26 2008, 1:25 PM EDT the motocross armour has plastic shock absorbers around the entire upper body, if you search it in google ,you'll see. I've got one which covers upper arms and elbows, as well as forearms, shoulders and chest. it doesnt limit my movement that much either. I havent yet got my goggles, but that was the sort of thing I was going for. I got the idea for the boonie from going airsofting. it helped alot. Do you find this valuable? |

I've never heard it called a combat shirt. And don't zombies operate mainly by smell? One key thing to remember when suiting up is that the zombies are going to try and grab hold of whatever they can...too much stuff hanging off you could potentially be dangerous. Also, you have to worry about being able to move quickly and silently in all this gear...if you're in the woods and the branches are scraping against your plastic armor that can be pretty loud...also can't forget heat exhaustion/stroke...that's just as much a threat as zombies are especially if water is scarce. RE: Personal Protective Gear
May 26 2008, 10:41 PM EDT Here's a thought : latex gloves under your regular gloves. If you do a lot of shooting, or if comes down to a long, drawn out melee, hands tend to blister. If some zed goo gets in a burst blister, that's all she wrote! Leather gloves could get soaked through with the stuff over time and a latex layer might come in handy. Sure, you wouldn't want to wear them 24/7, but when it got time to get busy, maybe. Do you find this valuable? |
