No fire please.
Jun 10 2008, 10:51 AM EDT I wouldnt use fire to cook food. The zombies might smell the beef and come too look for it. Since I have small group and we are hiding type, canned foods would be more useful. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

But you're right, fire might not be the best option; Try heat packs (commercially available, and VERY hot). 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jun 26 2008, 4:11 AM EDT I'm not sure... First off, I would guess that the a zed's sense of smell will certainly not be better than that of a living person. Secondly it probably deteriorates after death, as the body decomposes. Zeds handle on instincts, probably mostly on impulses from the reptilian brain, and any animal's instinct is to flee from fire, not to draw nearer it (depends on how much memories from past life they have), and my guess is that a zed would have to be very close already to feel the smell of cooking food over the smoke. At least it might be a good idea to shield the fire as they might be attracted to light. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jun 26 2008, 3:01 PM EDT I have to say that I believe they would smell the smoke. From what we're taught, fiction or not, the brain is the epicenter of all the function in a Zed's body, and that all the rest of the organs have become obsolete. Now, that may not mean that these Zombies are capable of cognitive thought and development, but I would think that because the sinuses, and the ability to detect smell would remain due to its proximity to the brain. As does vision, and sound. I would think that their motor skills are faulty because of their distance from the brain. Think of it like a small power source. You can run objects close to the battery, on less wire, thus needing less energy. To run something a further distance away, it's necessary to produce more power to run it. If the Zed's brain only effectively works on minute amounts of "power" then it's focused on smell, sight, and hearing for as long as the sinuses, the optical nerves, and the ear drum stay intact. And the legs and arms and less effective than the others. Seems logical to me. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 19 2008, 10:40 PM EDT Or just buy loads and loads of canned heat before Z-Day. Its a gel, smokeless, and heats hot enough to melt pewter (Yeah, it really does...personal experience :D) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 26 2008, 1:21 PM EDT Hmmm... I wouldn't eat canned foods if I were you. Why? well, those things can last years and years, right? What happens when you run out? you see, canned food is great, but it should only be eaten when you cannot get fresh food. That way, you will always have food with you even on the run. :D 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 29 2008, 4:01 AM EDT I'm guessing no one has heard of Ceviche? Ceviche is really just pickling with a fancy name. Take some meat (fish, beef, or chicken), fruit, vegetable, or all of the above together. Slice ingredient(s) thin to cook faster. Citruis based marinade (lemons, limes) time depending on amount of food. Eat. No fire, no refrigeration needed, and all bacteria, microbes, etc... are dead. And you can cook it and move at the same time if you have something to carry it in (zip-lock bags work). And if you don't have lemons or limes, you could use stuff like lye or vinegar, but you couldn't really call it Ceviche after that. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Nov 4 2008, 6:43 PM EST If you are going to use fire, make sure you dont use it near your home base (the cooking kind, a fire just for warmth should be fine as long as it is not big and is sheilded so zeds cant see it). As for when to eat what kind of foods, i think a diet high in fruits and vegis will be good, as long as you can get ahold of them, and you can eat your precious precious canned meat when you need the protein and energy boost. Fire should only be used when you want a special treat, like fried spam (yummy, tasty fried spam....) Do you find this valuable? |

Nov 4 2008, 6:58 PM EST Seams like with all of the rotting flesh, the smell of a small fire shouldn't matter that much. You can always rig a grill. If you don't have one take a metal box ( oven, microwave, large pot ), and place an oven rack on top. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Ceviche
Nov 4 2008, 7:38 PM EST I have heard that it works best with fish, anyone have experience? Mexican style steak tartare is prepared with lime juice, so could be considered a variation. Raw meat, poultry, and fish widely eaten around the world. Bit too raw for my taste. Do you find this valuable? |

Nov 4 2008, 7:42 PM EST If my meat isn't cooked I don't eat it. The last thing you need to do during an out break of skin jobs is to get sick. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Nov 4 2008, 8:29 PM EST "If my meat isn't cooked I don't eat it. The last thing you need to do during an out break of skin jobs is to get sick. "Keep in mind though, not all cooked food- Is HOT. Dried foods, dried meats especially, ARE cooked, even if they never come near a fire. More than one way to skin a cat… Speaking of which… 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
