I know this will make everyone cringe but...
Jun 25 2008, 12:22 AM EDT Bugs. Grubs, grasshoppers, ants, even cockroaches (my mom claims that I ate a cockroach when I was 11 months old) anyway, a pound of oatmeal can't last you very long, but put a bunch of grubs in it, a slice of potato or apple for water (switch out the slice every week or so unless you want to start growing mold) and you can either eat the grubs live or you can kill, bake, and crush them into insect flour, you can put that into most foods or put it on salad or soups, or meat of course, (but remember, despite its name insect flour can't be used as a substitute for flour) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jun 25 2008, 12:46 AM EDT They taste rather good. A chocolate cricket tastes like a crunch bar. Fried beetles taste better than chicken. Grubs have no taste, put salt on after cooking. Insects are awesome. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Oatmeal
Jul 19 2008, 9:41 PM EDT The regular kind of oatmeal, not the instant processed kind, will last for at least ten years, if kept dry. Put a small bag of silica or other water-absorbing agent into the oatmeal containers. I use Tupperware, bought a ton of them from my neighbor who got out of the biz. If kept in the dark, cool and dry, Tupperware will stay sealed as long as the Oatmeal stays fresh. Oatmeal can be made into breads, etc., so it is one of the largest commodities at my BOL. I prefer snakes and lizards to grubbs and crickets but you gotta do what you gotta do. living in the southwest has taught me to respect all manners of lower life as food. also as a growing boy and a boyscout I was never far from the next "taste it" chalange. these skills provided me with the upper hand durring survival training in SFAS. even in the desert its not hard to find food or water, you are only limited by your mind. you can pull a days ration of water from a small cactus and also consume the buds and the "leaves"(dont know what there actualy called). need fiber, i find a good dose comes from poderosa pine bark(its vanilla smell makes it apealing to!). protein is easy to get from jackrabbits, coyotes, ravens(crows) dogs, cats and most forms of reptiles. if the infection has forced you into eating stuff like grubbs and cockroaches take compfort in knowing that new mexico is home to millions of species of edible bugs. hell, a few of our traditional foods and candies (sold in stores) contain a large variety of critters from creepy crawlies in lollypops to tequilla worms in only our best drinks. stop by today, and dont forget to pick up your comlimentry barf bag at the border!!! Sep 3 2008, 5:53 PM EDT "bugs are goods termites are really good bugs are almost pure protein if i recall right?"Grubs are high in fat, good for mixing with lean meat like rabbit to prevent sickness. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Sep 3 2008, 6:21 PM EDT In one of my classes at high school a couple years ago, one of our outdoor ed. teachers made us eat fried grasshoppers to pass. Only like 2 girls actually did it. It wasn't bad, but i'd prefer something with a little more substance, like a snake or lizzard, or even a rat, i'd not even think twice about eating a snake, lizard, or rat, but eating a bug would make me gag a little. Sep 3 2008, 7:07 PM EDT "if you cook a zombie well enough could you eat it?"I'm sure there'll plenty of food options before that happens, but theoretically if you boiled the meat it would be theoretically safe to eat, theoretically speaking... I'm avoiding that scenario nonetheless, even if that means I jack a couple pigs and cows from somebody at gunpoint for my team if they refuse to trade them first. Do you find this valuable? |

Sep 4 2008, 9:32 PM EDT "im sure youve wonderd what people taste like"Sure I have, [I apparently have a citrus-like flavor after licking my arm out of boredom one day] but I'm not gonna kill someone and find out theirs, even during the Apocalyse... Like I said, if someone plans well enough they WON'T have to eat another person or zed.... Do you find this valuable? |
