Future Fortresses
Jun 27 2008, 7:34 PM EDT I am a paranoid teen (16) waiting for the day they come and well if it doesn't happen too soon this is my plan for survival ~Build my own gated "community" ~Have house inside said "community" as well as spare room for survivors ~"Community" be surrounded by 12 foot concrete walls ~Steel gate that slides into said wall ** swing gates in my opinion are weak ** ~Hydrogen self-sustaining generator ** they'd better get these in mass production soon.......so close for them to be ready to ** ~Arsenal of small arms, mainly semi-automatic but a few good accurate bolt-action rifles ~Enough ammo for search for survivors as well as sustaining defense for fortress ~Underground fuel storage with 2,000 gallons of fuel (1 tank of 1,000 gallons of gasoline and 1 with diesel) ~Radio broadcaster for survival news with my general area and well being no recordings they generally mean that its pointless to go there, their already dead, well sort of ~Enough food in frozen storage to last a year as well as live-stock, and the abilities to grow crops ******Please point out the flaws in my plans and then you may also post your own plan****** 3 out of 5 found this valuable. Jun 27 2008, 7:43 PM EDT Your plan seems pretty flwless except for the hydrogen generator, as the way hydrogen is made in modern day is from gasoline. But that could be the reason you have the fuel in the first place so I'll back off. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jun 27 2008, 7:45 PM EDT actually they have a nearly perfected self sufficient generator that uses its own power to separate the water molecules it puts out and reuses the hydrogen it is very close to being perfected 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jun 27 2008, 9:12 PM EDT I would add the ability to grow new crops. And I'd break up the fuel depot into 10 fule bunkers of 100 gallons each; That way, if one catches fire the rest won't go up with it. Ohter than that, looks like a good start.;) 2 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jun 28 2008, 8:52 PM EDT "(L)obotomizer from world war z..."Oh God... Listen folks, he meant all that as a joke- That's why you find them in joke shops, not serious bookstores (or if you do, it's under humor). Just look at the back page- Humor. Please, for God's (and your own) sakes, don't take that man at his word; It would be as if FEMA wrote an disaster book (and we all know how good a job FEMA does). 2 out of 5 found this valuable. RE: Future Fortresses
Jul 4 2008, 11:08 AM EDT The man above is correct. The guide many zombie fans feel is a true bible about zombies was written as a joke. This doesn't mean the information it contains is all bad (in fact, much of the information about weaponry and fortresses is very good, my sole axe to grind being about the M-16--actually your ideal survival rifle-- and the AK-47 which is actually very unideal), but he made up everything about the zombies, the zombie virus (Solanum is a type of plant) and every one of the zombie attacks. 3 out of 4 found this valuable. Aug 15 2008, 1:50 PM EDT If we are working on the theory that we have the year(s) it would take to put all this together, then why not get trained in an aircraft such as a helicopter so that you could- a) search for other survivors without ever opening your gates b)search for supplies such as fuel c)be able to attack from the air with mass fuel bombing or the like d)evacuate quickly in case of them breaking in 2 out of 4 found this valuable. Aug 20 2008, 6:11 PM EDT they are good in their own aspects AK-47 is more powerful but less accurate and a bad recoil M-16 is more accurate and with less recoil but is nowhere near as powerful 1 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Aug 20 2008, 7:45 PM EDT My notes are: 1. WATER: You made no mention as to how you would get water assuming the local water supply is infected or unsfe for human consumption. 2. Enviroment: No mention to the local enviroment ie. storms, temerature (for cold weather gear), insects or rodents. 3. Situational awareness: How well is the visibility and ability to not get ambushed by raiders? 4. wall: what is the visibility on top of the wall? What's the protection on top? How will you keep it from collasping over time? Your plan is good, but needs revision. And i agree with ANDY, how many zees will have bulletproof vests on? 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Aug 21 2008, 10:18 AM EDT Why not include solar panels in your design in case you don't get those generators? Now, here's an idea to get some. After early zee day, go to a factory where they make them and grab some. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Future Fortresses
Aug 21 2008, 10:34 AM EDT Well, there are mechanisms that do such things as this: Put in 100% of the raw material, to get 100% the potential fuel. Burn 50% of the fuel to process 100% of the raw material. This leaves a total of 50% of the fuel left over to be used some place else. Far from perpetual motion, and far from "free energy." But this concept is not too far-fetched to think about, nor is it impossible. And this being only an example, it is not to be taken too literally. Now, when it comes to hydrogen and whatnot... I simply don't know enough about it to make an educated guess. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Aug 21 2008, 12:27 PM EDT "Now, when it comes to hydrogen and whatnot... I simply don't know enough about it to make an educated guess."Jack, I was referring specifically to hydrogen production as the OP described. If it requires an external input, that is consumed, to work, that is something different. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Future Fortresses
Aug 21 2008, 12:55 PM EDT what if the world governments go nuts and open up with nukes? what if they just use carpet bombing entire swaths? What if military units go nuts like in 28 days later? Are your bolt action rifles going to dent a M1A tank? Will they even slow down a Bradley IFV? Want to see your loved ones undergo torture and rape? What if bandits acquire near-military grade or military grade hardware? Hell, what if they just get a Hummer H1 original and stick on 2-4 inches of steel plate? Even a .50 wouldn't do anything. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
