I'm just thinking (if for some reason you haven't) that fossil fuels will be nigh impossible to get hold of, except for petrol. And petrol would be more useful in vehicles.

Unless you go loot a power plant (or take over one), you're going to have to build these power sources from scratch. That pretty much rules out Fission and Fusion power, unless you happen to have some degrees in Nuclear Physics and the necessary materials to stop your fortress and fellow survivors sprouting extra limbs.

Most of these techniques generate heat energy (except for geothermal, which harnesses heat energy, I think). That heat can boil water, which generates steam, which drives a turbine, creating electricity. Either that, or the force that the power plant harnesses drives the turbine. This makes it relatively easy to build a power generator, albeit requiring a lot of resources.

More coming.

Very true. Wood is also a fossil fuel which is in abundance. It can serve the purpose of coal; not petrol however. Petrol is probably the most useful fuel source we could get.
Thanks for the rest of the information Quickrace89; I might add some of it into a sub page below Energy sources.

Why not be prepared for this and purchase solar panels or at least the equipment. I plan on taking a radio station and fortifying the position. Simply because I get a tower to broadcast local news and zed locations. I may or may not be able to hook up a wifi to the tower to use it for that as well. I'll have to talk to a few of my friends that know how to hook up an internet server basics. Do you find this valuable?

Haldred, you're absoloutely correct. And if we happen to meet after Z-Day, I'd be happy to help you set up an internet server. Do you find this valuable?
