It used to be Rotties and Shepards...

Not sure when the big Change in dogs began to happen.

Living deep in Eastern Oregon's desert farmland, the Outbreaks didn't seem to be real, nor any bother to we out here.

Folks did panic and in turn try to "run to the country", many of the western Oregon towns and metro areas were quickly taken, their populations made into the Undead.

A few of we those with larger trucks, iron, skills with welding and fabrication soon made our Long Range Expedition and Recovery sleds meant just for finding our way through wreckages and the messes left.

Ammunition, medications, assorted foods, and surprisingly enough dozens of canines.
Chemicals for our farming, living and eating were especially needed, greatly prized.

One our first run into Gresham, eastern side of Portland, we came across a small warehouse filled with cleaning chemicals. Not many were "exactly" needed, but our resident basement bomber was ble to say which would be of good use.

Inside the warehouse office there was an emaciated poorly kept sable G. Shep dog. Suspect he was 120 pounds or so while he was healthy. He was alive, barely.

Out on the Farm, we had a collection of many dogs, however "mutts" they were were breeding carefully, we looked for alertness and a strong prey drive. Not many filled our needs.

"Portland" runs became a looking for former pets and critters that could be used for our lives out East. Big hounds caught our attention. Not many of the Undead could walk away from a Shep or Rottie properly protected from bite.

As our supplies dwindled, entering deeper into infected territory we went. Soon trips to Spokane, Boise, and even Seattle were happening.

Our large dogs were a help, however feeding them, keeping them healthy became a serious problem. Sooner those with congenital problems, hips, hearts, eyes were causing more time caring for them.

More: It used to be Rotties and Shepards...

As our Pack began to age and die, replacing them, their stock weakened by in and -cross breeding, seeking canines became a priority.

As things began to close in on our enclave, Undead being found in places we had not met them prior, canine companions were more a necessity.

Our little group had given birth to a dozen children over those years, and now we had toddlers and youngsters to have extra eyes needed for them.

Coming over the shortwave was news of the use of "dauchies" for combat and surveillance work.

Looking through our pack we found several mini-pinchers, dauchies, terriers, and assorted mixes.

With advise from those on the 'wave training those smaller hounds began. On several of the Portland trips our smaller mutts did well finding cached materials we'd missed prior.
One of our little girls found a deep elevator well filled with dozens of the Undead, all which were hungry, primed and ready for our entry into the highrise building. Never heard them, never saw them, in the stench, couldn't smell them.

Out bold little girl dog found them, alerted, and in turn was captured and eaten by those fucking walking corpses.

Without her, we may not have made it through the zombies, and certainly not out of there.

We've selected those little hounds we want for our Zhunds.

Prefer a mix of Doxie/Min-pin/Min Fox Terrier and Chihuahua.
Makes for a small 10-13 pound large eared, smart, fast, somewhat obedient and VERY trainable loyal Zhunder.

We've stabilized our breeding panel, and now our hunds are quite useful, taken everywhere, even on short runs outside our Green Zones.

As our large breeds are leaving us, or in their elderly times are weak and retired, the New Breed Zhund is workign well for our use at Home and Road.

Our Wall of Honor has 38 Humans and 116 Hunds listed as KIA.

For every dog lost many Humans are saved, even my own life.

Little Zdogs useful

Another attempt by the Q to infiltrate our Commons outpost was stopped by our little Zhunds ability to infiltrate and in turn roust those hidden infected who were hiding.

Trucks rolling towards Inspection/Quarantine gate are given a good looking over top to bottom, first looked at by our pack of little Zhunds, sniffing out anything that may even have slightest scent of the Horrors.

Pack Leader/Head Bitch "Gin-Gin" found several Z's tied under framework of the 10 wheeled truck that delivers produce we trade for out of Yakama Valley area.
Seems that today's driver is, well, was a Q, and for whatever reasons known only to his diety, tried to smuggle two Zedheads into our Safe Zone.

Gin-Gin found both, alerted, in turn they were mopped up by firing off the truck, its contents well outside fence. Hated to burn a good working diesel truck, but won't risk Infection.

Driver, a now know Quisling, his head resides on a pike pole. His useless carcass burned with the truck and Zeds.

Training Zhunds requires hours of ensuring that the little girl dogs are quiet, sneaky, and only alert when it is required.

Working towards the medium to small Zhund is our goal. Less intense on feed, feces and space. Bigger dogs are still used and appreciated, however their bloodlines and in turn abilities are becoming too close.
Seems the medium to small dogs are majority of what is incoming from City Raids and Gatherings. Terriers are a prize Take for our efforts.

Will consider trading with other Groups and Units dog for dog. Send up yours, and we'll return a Zhund that will make Search and Security easier.

Seems even the most dedicated Zhund isn't quite enough against an entire wild hoard of Q driven Zeds.

On Free East OrYgunn's northern border is Columbia River, miles of now overgrown thickets of wild berries, Russian Olive and wild desert plants.

Our people have kept good eye along our "coast" now that commercial shipping has ceased, and nothing but fishers and their boats ply those waters. We keep a continued eye on "our" hydropower dam, that spans Columbia, while working and connected provides up with electricity for all industry and living here.
This morning early, sun raising on new fall day, sweetly as heat has now passed, an alert by one of Gin-Gin's youngster pups caused our kids then guarding River Bridge Number One to go to full alarm.

None of we had heard little Squirrel do as much as grrr or snarl before, she was almost too mellow for a guard/search hund.

This morning, she went "postal", looking over bridge abutment and trying to jump that horrifying 65 feet to waters below. Quickly caught, scooped up, Guards went to hard lockdown of Bridge, radioed in for help.

Little Squirrel broke free, ran to south end of bridge, went over side, began to run towards river bank. At bank her nose twitched, her leg up in a high, tight point.

At that point hell broke loose on riverbank. Squirrel and her packmates, all five others who had run down with she, started baying and barking at the deep, dark cold running Columbia.

No one remembers *when*, but *what* came out of the waters.
Zed virus affected hogs and former humans, being egged on by two Quislings, literally up the rock beach towards a hole in our wire, the gate into FEO.

From that which we could find, three of our little terriers gave All in our defense. Two more were bitten, and given the Dose.

Tonight, with no human loss, we give them to the Fire..
