What if the Water Supply is Infected?
Aug 12 2008, 9:19 AM EDT I don't know anything about where tap water comes from. The sewers? Anyway, I was wondering. What if the tap water became infected with the zombie virus? 21 out of 24 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: What if the Water Supply is Infected?
Aug 12 2008, 11:30 AM EDT easy, if you are on the run you will have your own sorce of water, if you are smart and planning it as a survival mission rather than a "RUN AWAY RUN AWAY" mission, you will bring a small pan or pot and have the ability to make fire. boil what water you can find and run through some sort of filter to remove physical contaminates (sticks, dirt) i personally keep an extremely fine brass meshed coffee filter in my mess kit to run the water through before boiling 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Aug 13 2008, 11:54 PM EDT Boiling for ~thirty minutes will kill any and all life in your water. It won't remove radiation or chemicals, though. 5 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

Aug 14 2008, 8:17 AM EDT "Boiling for ~thirty minutes will kill any and all life in your water. It won't remove radiation or chemicals, though."true about the chemicles or radiation however its been proven you dont need to boil it for a full 30 min, thats just over kill and a waste of water (the steam escaping) all you really need to do is bring it to poiling, if it boils for 1 min you have boiled it more than enough to kill all bacteria and forign life. i got this from the army survival guide so someone with military back ground please either back me up or correct me indicating my copy is a fake 1 out of 2 found this valuable. It's like cooking your meat. ALWAYS overcook the meat if you don't want to get sick. not burn, just overcook. Overall: Overkill = Good Underkill = Dead 5 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

What if the tap water became infected with the zombie virus?"Infected with the Z-plague? Maybe we're screwed. Otherwise i follow the same steps i do anywhere: Filter, Iodine, Boil. If we can't get it all out, you either live off bottles, reverse osmosis, or moisture farming. 0 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Zombies are not the only things that can kill you. There is something called disease... Thing is, you'll have no real choice in the matter. If the water is contaminated, then you'll end up wishing you boiled it for 5 minutes longer then you did. Catch my drift? Overall, you must boil it longer then the minimum time. Why? Well, the minimum is called the minimum for a reason. :D 5 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

Aug 15 2008, 1:53 PM EDT Head up stream. Find the nearest creek/river and follow it up stream (hoping that the path is clear of course). You will have to get to a point eventually near the source that is pure. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Aug 15 2008, 2:26 PM EDT "Not everyone has that luxury, though.... just so you know."true, precious few here that are freshwater, most of our fresh water around here are lakes, and those are spring fed, if they get contaminated aint no source to go to Do you find this valuable? |

RE: What if the Water Supply is Infected?
Aug 15 2008, 2:36 PM EDT Adding chemicals to purify water is an enormous waste of limited resources. Additionally, chlorination of water has been shown to decrease IQ. You do not want decreased IQ, especially during Z-plague. So do what some European nations do- use ozone. Ozone is very toxic to all known life forms, but is an very unstable chemical at this pressure and temperature, having an half-life of around 2 seconds (depends on the pressure and temperature), usually totally gone before 30 seconds. Producing ozone is very simple, because it is simply another configuration of oxygen, instead of bimolecular O2 that we use for breathing, the O3 configuration can be produced by using air (duh) and an ozone production machine, and some electricity. Set up your water to flow through the ozonifying machine, and let the bubbling begin. 0 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Aug 16 2008, 2:01 AM EDT Honestly if the water supply is the cause or is infected, well then we are screwd big time. By the time it would be found out that the water is the reason for it , the outbreak would just be massive end of the world size. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: What if the Water Supply is Infected?
Aug 16 2008, 11:23 PM EDT Well I'm happy I'm not Screwed. I actually already thought about that so I've been putting it threw filters and letting it sit out (like how chlorine evaporates) and then storing it in milk jugs. I've got like 2 months of water stored up already. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Aug 17 2008, 12:11 AM EDT Even is the Zed virus isn't in the water supply there are still plenty of reasons to make sure you are drinking clean water, some references here: http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/manual/water.shtml http://www.epa.gov/ogwdw000/faq/emerg.html http://theepicenter.com/tow02236.html http://www.aquatechnology.net/emergencywaterpurification.html 1 out of 2 found this valuable.
