Electric Bikes
Aug 13 2008, 7:50 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 13 2008, 7:50 PM EDT
What do you people think of a bike that you can hop on, start riding in one of the 7 gears, then pull back on the throttle and you are boosted up to 20 MPH for up to 25 miles of pure electric riding. The batteries are about as big as a loaf of bread (shorter though), but you could easily carry one on the rack on the back wheel along with saddle bags. Two batteries means a 50 miles range on a total of $ .20 electricity. You could use a solar panel to recharge to bikes.

I'm buying one tomorrow morning for $1649 (Ultra Motors Europa) and the combination of extremely high efficiency and good short-medium distance travel kept saying zombie scenario to me. My main motivation is food runs into town which is 2 miles away, why not a food run into town pulling a bike trailer?

If your juice ran out on the way back to base, and there are zeds on your tail, you'll be /skewed/. Make sure you don't get too coky and practically announce your presence. Note that pulling a trailer -- even a small contianer -- takes a lot of your speed away, and adding food makes it take even more away. Constant vigilance! Do you find this valuable?

One thing to also consider is a small gass powered motor instead of an electric one. I figure its easier to get gas then to charge the battery.

heres a website for either a kit or you can buy a whole bike from them....for a lot less than an electric one...
http://www.gasbike.net/

Also one thing I like is that if you hold in the clutch, you can ride it like a normal bicycle without the noise.

maybe it is now, but after the panic, gas will be a rare commodity, solar /electric power would be a good choice, plus it's much quieter than a gas motor, which means that you will be able to sneak around easier. my main concern is that many electric motors are slower than gas motors, be carefull about that.

a hand crank generator like this one would charge those batteries in no time, and if you attached it to the bike correctly, you could charge the battery while you rode, increasing its range.

Naw you're still on a bike so you could out run them even if they were sprinting.

IDK, I have had issues with electric bike before, so I might be bias. Overall though, the concept IMO is great. Do you find this valuable?

The whole electric bike thing is sound untill you have to wait 5 days for your solar panels to charge you batteries to any level. Kinda sux if you only have a couple hour head start on the zombies.

Well that's why you mount solar panels to it. Plus, solar panels today are more efficient than you may think. If the bike runs one 48 watts(amps? I forgot which would be used in this case) then you can attach a solar panel size enough to output a portion of that, and either charge as you go, or only use a fraction of the battery.

Im not going to lie, I;m not a huge fan of this idea. While I do admit, its the most pheasable because it wouldnt really require much maint. or any real fuel, I'm just not sure if I could charge it that often. I mean, Im going to be holed up somewhere most of the time(I assume), so for me I might want a bicycle generator. But thats just me... Do you find this valuable?
