Just wanting an opinion on this topic.
Aug 14 2008, 4:13 AM EDT
Well my family has a medical history for very bad things. Heart problems, diabetes, lung problems, colon polyps, being overweight, and last but not least an overactive ear when it comes to wax production (this eventually makes me deaf if it isn't cleaned at least once every year and a half, not too mention I get ear infections often from it.) So in a post apolyptic world with no professional healthcare, there's basically no chance of me dying of old age is there?

Sadly yes. In a Class 4 outbreak (apocolyptic) it's key to exercise and stay fit in the case of a "fight or flight" scenario. That automatically eliminates obesity if you take care of your health and diet which inturn lowers your risk of diabetes. However, it doesn't fix your heart/lung issues. Those are the things that are gonna bring you down. It isnt so likely you'd spawn a colon polyp if your body is well taken care of and you're receiving proper nutrients. And the ear thing....big woof, clean 'em. Hearing is key to survival; the moan gives them away.

Thing is, when death is constantly part of our lives, we tend to stay in shape no matter the situation. If we are alive, that's pretty much the same thing as saying we are healthy. Unhealthy people die off naturally, so...Yeah... Overall, if you have health problems, do your best to work around them. You will naturally have a harder time then most, but if you learn how to work around some things, you might just live to old age. Now cancer and other stuff, I can't help you there... Both of my grandfathers died of lung problems, one of my grandmothers of cancer and the other just gave up. Looking at the options, how do you want to die? Do you find this valuable? |

How young, and you use Q-tips to well, clean your ears. Don't jam them through, that'll make it worse. Just rub the inside of the ear with it, and dispose once dirty. (Don't worry, they come in boxes of 100 or so) To see how far you can clean safely, just stick one in (slowly) until you feel pressure/pain. That's how far you can go without worrying about safety. Damn, I can't believe I said all this...BTW cleaning your ears is a must for most people once a year and a half, it's normal. Either that, or I have the same problem you do. To help your heart and lungs, jog around, swim, and play a musical instrument (I recommend flute. It works your lungs a LOT and it isn't a girly instrument. Most medieval men who could play a woodwind played the flute. Tell them that.) The jogging and swimming will help a lot with your heart and lungs. P.E classes will help out. ESPECIALLY Pacer. If you can max out Pacer, then you have just ended your families heart and lung problems (I think) Can't help you with the diabetes though....Just try not to eat foods that put your blood sugar levels into the danger zone....then get a habit of identifying them on sight. Eating those foods a lot will also let you develop a taste to them also.

The school system is not made to handle everyone. some people are just too smart for the system :PSeriously though, Your IQ is not a measure of how smart you are. Only a measure of how much information you can gather and HOLD. in a given amount of time. With motivation I can remember anything... as long as it has nothing to do with school... Specifically school. :P Anyhow, what I said about school was true. Some people just don't fit into the standard system. It's like trying to rate a high-performance sports car with a system intended only for much slower, much weaker cars. Speeds that are safe for the sports car may not be a safe speed for the slow/weak cars. Also, many of the great minds in history tended to flunk in school at one point or another. :P but this thread isn't about the school system, people's IQ's ans such. It's about the personal heath of mr earwax! :D Do you find this valuable? |

15. Soon after Day Zed, I'm a dead man
Aug 15 2008, 8:50 PM EDT
zombieman98..I am a middle aged "old fart" who due to diabetic problems and chemical exposures from work now is using dialysis to keep alive. What I use is not invasive as in clinic based, but requires a stable supply of cleaning agents delivered monthly. Post Day Zed, when the World flushes, those supplies will be considered "gone", I'll use what is stashed here, and hopefully reuse the *hardware*, and home brewed solutions as long as they will hold out. If infection does not occur, and we can manipulate things so I can have clean blood, may live "longer". But still not expecting that long life be my lot. If you are in a family known for medical problems, get off your ass, exercise, eat less and better, and learn to drink as little fluid as you can to help in a future with little to no easy to use potable waters. Heart, lung problems are helpable with weight loss and dietary changes. Diabetes in young folks is either hereditary, or sloppy carb filled eating habits. Start today. Put down the soda pop bottle. Quit with the junk foods. Eat more greenery and veggies. Get out and walk, ride your bicycle. Don't use 'things' as an excuse to do little to nothing to help promote health. Your life as an uninfected, whatever you do will be an asset that cannot be replaced by handing a newbie a book and a dull butter knife.. Up to you to make the life changes so you die with elan, style, grace, or in battle.. Rather than on my medical clinic's bed in a puddle of your own unmedicated squalor.. Do so for you, and your Team. *Out* *EOM* 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Average lifespan in the ancient world (if you survived childhood, which would take half) would be early 60s. Without medical care, your first heart attack will likely be your last (it still is 1/3 of the time!). Any cancer will kill you. Any degenerative condition will likely eventually kill you (like diabetes). Also, without vacination regemines, within a generation exspect measles, mumps, and TB to once again rise to the top of fatal human diseases. If you are on the move (read - always cold and often wet), you will likely start getting secondary infections (trench foot, ring worm, mange, septic leasons, etc). Also, one that everyone forgets - blindness. How many 50 year olds are blind without their glasses? You can raid a store and try everything on the rack, but remember grampa out in the sticks who couldn't tell who you are and used an ear horn? That will return. Do you find this valuable? |

"Average lifespan in the ancient world (if you survived childhood, which would take half) would be early 60s. "Ancient world? Define that time period, and then say where you get that average. It was between 20 and 30 for a hell of a long time, and only recently has it crested 65. Do you find this valuable? |

The Ancient World means anything before the Classical Age (the Classical Age would be ancient Greece and Rome, where ancient there just means the pre-Middle Ages Greece and Rome, not the contemporary Greece and Rome). So, for those not interested in the humanities lesson, anytime before say 350BC. Yes, I'm sure you have seen things like "the lifespan in ancient Rome was 35." Those are average lifespans. They included those who died in childhood (though normally not those dead at birth). Back then, if you survived childhood illness, and made it to your mid-20s, your odds were good of dying of a degenerative illness in your 50-60's (heart attack, cancer, etc.) There were some diseases that would strike in the prime (TB being the most common and deadly, though even it aims at the young and old). So, assuming you are in your 20's and safe from childhood diseases (scarlet fever, MMR, etc). Then, even without medical help, you are likely to reach your 60s. Do you find this valuable? |
