Alright, let's think 10 years after the zombies first appeared. Zombies will be existing in one of two ways.

1) Massive super-hordes numbering in the millions

3) in groups no larger then 3, scattered over hundreds of miles of land.

Now, we have plenty of tactics to deal with the Zombie super-hordes, and quite a few tactics to deal in small, random encounters.

Thing is, none of us have a long-term zombie extermination plan.

Yeah "go zombie hunting" is great if you are willing to go out every day killing zombies (attacking), but hasn't anyone ever thought of a more passive approach? Like setting up traps that you check every week or so, and if there is a zombie, just kill it then and there and reset the trap?

You don't have to walk nearly as far or as often, making zombie slaying much safer, easier, and more at your leisure.

How do you expect to keep your territory zombie free? What will you do to keep the zombies from getting too close to your home when you are not there to stop them personally?

I think we need a page dedicated to predominantly defensive/passive tactics that don't require you to risk your life (much).

you can try like having random propan tanks scattered and shoot them to take out a croud of them. have random bear traps and mines so that once they hit a mine you know they are there( and any zombies around too so thats a draw back to that part)
very deep pits and trenches that are difficult to climb out of so you can just kill any in there and burn the bodies when they are dead-dead.
hidden spring loaded traps that either slings them a very far distance or impales them in the head or body and holds them there until you can kill it.

have cameras and a surveillance system in for detecting movement so that you can be sure that its a deer, human(alive and not a zombie), or the undead.
have heat sensoring to see if there are some in the dark.
possiable hunters traps that leads to a car compactor that squeezes anything in it to death (well dead again).

if its been 10 years you should possiably have an underground tunnel to the stores and have reinforced doors on them with surveillance cameras.
solar powered weapons(if your a genuious at making things) used for killing things but very slow reload. one shot a day but helps if probable.
wear a SWAT tacticks armour to protect youself. and an extra set or 2 incase parts of it gets worn or lost.

It seems like there would be some methods from the past we could adapt. Man has lived with dangerous predators since the beginning, some of the ideals should be valid for dealing with Zed. Do you find this valuable?

the answered simple, when the first news reports of zombies appear, make some IEDs. Or stock up on Aerosols, cloth and petrol(gasoline), when you see a group of zombies on the horizon, partially soak the cloth in the petrol, wrap the aerosols in the petrol-soaked cloth being careful to get the non-soaked part looking kinda like a fuse, light it and throw it in the groups of zombies. for incendiaries, use cans of lighter fuel. I wouldn't recommend using gasoline as a fuse, the vapors usually ignite on the user and give them one hell of a flashburn and prematurely detonate the device in your hands...in a world where infrastructure no longer exsist it would leave one feeling like a jackass with 2nd-3rd degree burns and a bloody stump...I would recommend diesel fuel/kerosene or filling the plastic cap on top of the aerosol can with black powder and putting a cannon fuse of a suitable length into the powder. Gas has seriously degraded or evaporated, diesel is full of algae, aerosol cans have probably rusted through. Even if you have a fresh supply, would you have enough to waste?

deep trench with smooth concrete linings in a large circle around the perimeter, they fall in, cant get out. and you have someone make a round once a week with 100 or so bullets and they can just cap em. then send for a clean up crew. to get out, simple draw bridge. on another note, if you could figure out a way, use the moat idea but put some kind of curosive in it. Lye for example maybe battery acid if the fumes arent to bad idk im just thinking out loud at this point. Do you find this valuable?

Actually, Jack has asked a very intriguing question-
And one none of us seem to have answered. Traps are NICE, if they work. His point seems to be HOW do you track them down, especially that many of them, whether they’re spread out, or hunkered down…

Think of it like this- ¿How many of you have played a CRPG where you have to hunt down bad guys to kill them and take their money? ¿How long did that take? This especially applies of the bad guys are programmed that when you reach a certain level of strength, they try to avoid you.

Traditional methods, be alert to anything unusual, passive traps, fortified living quarters, guards as necessary. If there is a larger threat, take more active measures, hunting expeditions, more traps, more guards. Mankind has been dealing with predators for 10's of thousands of years, the general technique is down pat. Details have to be adapted to specific situations and resources. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I have to concur with byates. Simple vigilance is key to survival and rebuilding. Always have a member of the group awake and on guard. Ensure that you keep your weapons clean, your magazines changed out and loaded, and your equipment ready to go. After ten years, it's likely that you will have already adapted to this. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Make sure that they have an aiming point other than your radio signal, could get dicey.

Andy, the Warthog's amazing, I couldn't do that...That's my favorite aircraft!!

Hell_Razor: I sure don't...I don't think anyone on here except for AF members can honestly lay claim to that.

How about the breeding of super flys? Not a 70's pimp but like a house fly. A mix of selective breeding and genetic engineering (neither of which I could do). Then have maggots slowly eat away the numbers of zomibes(dead flesh = num-nums).

Granted the uber mistakes that could go wrong with that plan. Having to deal with flesh eating flys would suck ass.
