Survival Knife

A new knife has been proposed by Commonsense; Before it goes up, however, I'd like a quick review. Anyone with additional comments, plese do so.;)

Survival Knife
A commonly available and generally inexpensive (about $12US) survival knife, the blade itself is in the same basic form as a combat knife, with one side partially serrated toward the hilt. The hollow grip contains a compass, fishing wire, fishing wire, bait, and a small amount of additional space that you can use as you see fit.

I have a couple of those. If yo get one, try to get a good one though. I have a cheaper one, and it is kind of rattl-y, after i used it to chop logs with. U know, lay blade on log, smack the back of the knife with another log. It works well, but don't hold out on a good one, it'ss be worth it. Many als9o have sharpening stones in the sheath. Mine has matches (waterproofed by me), sewing needle x 2(heavy duty one), 25 feet of fishing line (or about that long), fishing hooks, folded up tinfoil, @ keychain rings that fit around the threads well (u can tie stuff onto them, i don't really know), line sinkers, and a compas in the hilt. It's pretty cool. Do you find this valuable?

Does not sound like a good ideal. A cheap knife blade attached to a hollow handle filled with cheap junk, topped by a cheap compass. These are my ideal of a cheap survival knife:

And this is what I would choose, taking a clue from the Mountain Men of the beaver trade.

My opinion based on my experience, your mileage may vary.

haha yeah, i got one of those knives but since i live in australia i got it in china town. $30 comes with everything you said... probabli could take a few out before breaking. I got an idea for a melee what every1 could make thou, effective to an extent.
Items:
long stick
key
nail
tape

Method of construction:
at one of the ends of the stick make a slit in the end of the stick and put the key in so the pointy end is facing out, like a spear
put a nail through the stick and key. tape it up and you have a makeshift spear... quite cheap as keys are always lieing around :P

I've got a survival knife. Where you said it's a cheap blade, consider this: I've cut down 10 inch circumference trees with it. In addition to the fishing line, I've also stored a small foler in there, which is good for precise work. When taking on Zed's, don't discount a survival knife.

OK, that is a bit over 3 inches diameter,
how fast did it cut through,
did you have to sharpen it,
how tight is the handle to the blade now?
There are a few acceptable hollow handle survival knives, the problem is that most are junk. I think I could make a blade out of a piece of rusty water pipe that could cut down a tree that size in under 10 minutes. Making would take a bit longer, cut slit down on side about the desired blade length, cross cut at the end of long cut leaving about a third the circumference untouched, heat to red heat, flatten, sharpen edges, reheat and quench, quench to harden metal, it won't harden much since it is low carbon steel, touch up edge cut to handy length, and start cutting. Don't overheat and don't work the metal cold.

Ok, so, ¿is there a SPECIFIC reason not to present the concept? Because if there isn’t (yes, Byates I heard you, it’s “cheap junk”), I’m putting it up. Do you find this valuable?

Hey, I am a fan of cheap junk, just be aware of it's limitations.
