Waterproofing matches.
Aug 23 2008, 12:10 AM EDT
I have found a way to waterproof your matches. All you have to do is get a sheet of wax paper out. Light a candle, then pour the candle wax into a pool on the wax paper. Roll your match heads around in the wax, You now can get yor matches wet, and all you have to do is rub the wax off, then use the match. I found it works best with strike-anywhere matches

I absolutely tried it. I read it somewhere, and thought, I wonder if it works? The wax didn't ignite the matches. Do you want pictures of my waterproofed matches? I have like 5 of them.

If you want me to add pics of the matches, i'll add them to my profile page, just tell me to. I can't get pics of me doing the process right now though, because it's dark, but maybe tomorrow.

"Ya, I’m sure. ¿And I assume you TIRED THIS and it didn’t blow up in your face, right?"I tried this. The cheapo match books sometimes catch on fire, but the nice softwood ones don't. Rubbing the wax off though is irritating, i used a chunk of concrete and it rubbed the phosphors off too, then when i was gentle it took several scrapes before it was clean enough for burning. I used real wood matches, i don't know what would happen to matchbook matches. I only rub off the tip of the wax, and since they are in the hollow of my survival knife, i can just cut the wax off. It actually works.

sorry it's http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/KNIVES%21%21%21 there's no ")" on the end. Anyways, i just went and made a new batch of matches. It works really well. Don't drip the wax right onot the matches, as it tends to make it big and globby, just our wax onto the wax paper, and roll the match around.

AdditionalNo matter what method you use, make sure the stick is waterproofed also, It could wick water into the match compound. Do you find this valuable? |

"Additionalok i dont see this on here unless i missed it so i will say it. why keep a fist full of waxed matches when a cheap, disposable bic lighter works alot better at starting a fire? i have taken bics and left them in pools, outside in the rain, i even dug one up from a lake shore by my house and it still worked. so why carry 5 CHANCES to light a fire when a bic will give you hundred if not THOUSANDS of fires? i keep 2 in my BOB at all time, not counting the whole box of lighers i keep on my coffee table. sometimes its good to be a smoker Do you find this valuable? |

Might as well have matches, what if you lose all of your stuff, except for yor survival knife that's strapped to your leg, and have no lighters, just pull out a match. It's always good to have more options. And as for an earlier comment, put wax at least 1/2 inch down the wood from the head, or it might soak in. You won't be leaving your matches lying in a puddle of water for more than a couple min. Whatever they are in will also prevent water, and just rain and quick submersions aren't gong to let your matches get waterlogged. Morale, don't set your matches in a pool of water, just because they are waterproofed doesn't mean you don't have to take care of them.

It’s one thing to put the wax on then flick it off right away, it’s another to leave it in your cabinet overnight, for a week, year, whatever. Or at least it could be… Do you find this valuable? |

I'm not too sure. I have had mine waxed for about a week now, and the wax is on fine. if in doubt, it's prety simple to add a new layer though.

I wonder if paste wax would work? Easier to put on, would probably be more water resistant than water proof, but as an emergency measure it should work.
