you really dont want to be using axes or knives because it may take half a second to put in a brain itl take a few more to pull out, personally i recommend a mallet, enough weight to smash easy skull, more than a hammer, but it wont take up too much space or slow you down like a sledge hammer or baseball bat 1  out of 1 found this valuable. A few thoughts on different types of hammers, the cross-peen would be good, the narrow edge would concentrate the blow and cause more damage, Straight claw or ripping and brick hammers have the equal of a straight spike coming off the head, also good for skull penetration. Tack and pick hammers also have narrow heads, but are handicapped by light weight, might not be able to develop enough energy to damage a skull quickly. I would select a 20 oz or heavier head weight to give smashing power. The pick hammer I was referring to was the body shop type, not the rock pick hammer, that would be another spike weapon, along with the Paleo pick by Estwing. Estwing, Plumb, and Stanley are good names in the hammer business, but there are others.

And there are other less common types of hammers.
