Zombie Fascination or fear?
Sep 2 2008, 4:23 PM EDT | Post edited: Sep 2 2008, 4:23 PM EDT
I have not what I call a "fascination" as much as I would call an Innate downright gut wrenching fear of zombies. I had never had a problem with death or reanimation of any kind until i was close to 30. I worked in nursing homes for most of my life before then. I took care of the dead before lunch. I washed, redressed and prepared them for the funeral home to pick them up. I saw nothing to fear in these people I had loved and cared for.
Things changed on January 6, 2004. I and my husband had gotten into some trouble with the police (yes, issues with drugs), and were having a hard go at life. We were both clean by then, gerting our lives back together. However, my nephew had stolen checks and forged them to get money out of our account-2 weeks before Christmas. We had given him a chance and told him to come by and repay us and we wouldn't press charges against him. It had snowed that day and was bitter cold. My husband had taken some items to the pawn shop just so we could pay some bills that were late. My newphew showed up while he was gone and told me that he had our money, but wanted to wait until my husband got home to talk and give it to him.
When my husband came home, all seemed ok. The two were talking in the dining room, I later heard shots fired in the dining room. He shot him, and I watched him die. And I thought I was next. I was held at gunpoint for hours, left to sit next to his dead body. knowing he would wake up and take me with him. That is when the fear set in. I can't sleep at night now. Only during the day. And so I wait. For them to come and take me. To make my death as painful and horrible as can be for living-when he died.
Now what do I do? Help me please.

You don't have a skin job fear, you got Post Traumatic Stress Disorder/Syndome (PTSDor PTSS, depending on which doc you talk to), and you got it BAD. I reccomend a licenced pychologist (and FWIW, I'm not saying sdomething abd about you; the shrinks are gonna put me on Prozak if I get any worse).

GO TO THE PYCHOLOGIST. NOW. Trust me on this one...BTW you have a fear of the underworld, death, and possibly the Grim Reaper. Am I the only one who believes the Reaper just gets a bad rep cause of his job?

I agree...I suffer[ed] from PTSD[S] [long story] and talking to a psychologist helped out greatly; he even helped get me off my medicine [5 different meds], much to the chagrin of the psychiatrist who was making money hand over foot from it.

The Grim Reaper does get a bad rep; he simply reaps souls... big friggin' deal.

Enough about the grim reaper, there's someone in ACTUAL TROUBLE here. (this IS Good Andy, not "Andy who bans people." Test me on this. Please.)

The SUBJECT is "Onzanzabarsands" issue; She's gopt PTSD/S and needs to deal with it.

To Andy:

I'd rather not test you on anything...Especially on an issue like this.

to Onzanzabarsands:

I've got a couple tips on how to not have the thoughts come up so regularly...I'm not a medical professional, but these have worked for me and may do so for you...

Avoid caffeine, over-the-counter cold meds, and talk with your doctor/physician about other stuff that you should avoid taking....

Also, exercise is a good stress/anxiety-reliever.

But that alone won't get it under control; it'll alleviate some of the stess..

To get it under better control, you should find a psychologist you can actually talk to without feeling uncomfortable; don't just settle for anyone as some aren't overly friendly in their practices.

Also, finding a support group is a good thing too, [ask the psychologist about it first, maybe they know a good one for people with a serious case as yours] if one isn't available, then talking to clergy or your family can help in concert with regular visits with the psychologist.

PTSD[S] is NOT a fun thing to have.....I hope that in due time you'll [along with any other PTSD[s] sufferers out there] be able to cope with it and eventually overcome it.

Thanks for all your responses. I have been diagnosed with PTSD, but have also been told there are issues other than that which pertain to my zombie phobia. I have been to a normal physician, therapist and psychiatrist. I have been prescribed many meds and taken off as many. I was more giving you some of the background for my phobia as to not come off as a flake or nutcase.
I am glad there are as many caring people out there as yourselves to try to help me out with my problem. I am actually to the point I was just wanting a take on what other normal folk may do to ease their fears-as I had not been able to have a rational thought about normalcy in such a long time. It has gotten to the point I am at what the therapist says is beginning stages of agoraphobia. I haven't worked, don't go outside much unless absolutely necessary, try not to answer the phone (or at least screen my calls very suspiciously) and have become socially inept. My only consolation in this whole issue is the internet. I have quite clearly come to the conclusion that zombies cannot type nor make a coherent phrase while browsing the web. However, there has been some comfort knowing there really are PEOPLE out there, somewhere.
I must also commend you for not making light of my situation, nor blowing me off as some deranged fruit. Any and all suggestions will be read, considered and very much appreciated. Thanks.
~Amy

Also, try reading online joke books. (which the reaper thing is....no need to be scared of him) Try reading comics in the online version of the sunday papers (AZ has one, don't know about the otherstates) The bigger your sense of humor, the better off you are :). Do you find this valuable?

Admidst all the people that live in their dream world, there are those that've chosen [or were forced by circumstance] to wake up and see the world for what it really is... I'll be freaking out too when the zeds ARE out there to get us all, but they aren't out there at the time of this post :)

Trust me, normalcy is a falsity..No one is normal since no one can truly define normal for everyone else and have them all agree with it.

However, it's been proven everyone is deranged to some degree. It's just when we let our derangedness take control of other areas in our life does it then truly develop into a problem.

I work on my many hobbies or even do housework [more so than the hobbies] in order to positively release the negative energy into something worthwhile...

You should definately try to get outside more if anything...I used to [still do] have a horrific fear of Nuclear warfare after seeing a 1950's PSA film when I was in elementary school, that's what started my collecting of gas masks and Cold War paraphenalia....Everyday after school I'd hide in my basement and even used a litterbox as a toilet, as pathetic as that may sound...But I was genuinely terrified nonetheless....Eventually I got over it by going outside for a few minutes every day after school until I was able to go outside without having the feeling that told me to run to the basement and hide....The school consequently stopped showing that video as it was fairly gruesome.

Oh, and I did forget to tell you people out there. As far as the psychology goes? I have an Associate's Degree in Abnormal Psych. I am also a certified EMT and CMA/CNA. I worked for a transformer company doing winding, welding (certified), stacking sheet metal, testing the KVAs and as a maintenance mechanic. I have worked in small engine workshops. Had my hunting license by the time I was 11 and USED to be a good shot. I recently lost my right eye so the depth perception isn't what it used to be. I have handled small hand guns for personal protection but have also handled semi and fully automatic weapons. This includes various SKS (german and japanese) with and w/o bayonets modified with a 70 round banana clip. I have also had the opportunity to shoot one of those fancy desert eagles-I was not impressed. I am not TOTALLY defenseless, just morbidly fearful.
Thought I would give you a little more FYI on me.

"(I) have also been told there are issues other than that which pertain to my zombie phobia."
So you're also a necorphobe.
Me, I was border-line suicidal for a while, but then I got over it too.

(For all who might be confused, "necro" means death, "phobe" means fear of, so a Necorphobe would be afraid of- Death. You know, like everyone who ISN'T suicidal.)

I have never been suicidal, more outward oriented, that seemed to worry the shrinks a bit more. Bothered my CO at one location a bit too, had me transferred across country away from him. Final decision was that I am not a danger to society, I will not risk myself for revenge.
