Honda Civic Weight Capacity
Sep 12 2008, 11:57 PM EDT | Post edited: Sep 12 2008, 11:57 PM EDT
Have you checked the weight capacity of your civic? I just did, it is 850 lbs, with 5 passengers that is 170 lbs per passenger, their weight and their booty. There is a safety margin in the published numbers, but how much overload are you willing to chance? Rough rule of thumb, check the weight rating on the standard tires and add 20%. And, don't drive over rough surfaces, you might break a spring. 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

Those Japanese really didn't design those things for my 200+lb all-American friends, did they?
Those are the "safe" numbers mind you; the vehicle may be able to carry more. I just took 4 friends on a road trip from Phoenix to Austin in my 97 Escort for a conference, full 3 day pack and all. Not to mention the swag on the way back. We were hauling WAY more than that and we made it the whole 2,000+ miles.
Thats me, though. I would actually hold a Civic to a higher standard than an Escort, wouldn't you?

I can't say what mine is rated at, but i have documented proof that a 1984 2d hatchback can hold 1000 lbs plus two passengers @ 125 each.
It wasn't on the bump stops but hit them a good few times.
While nothing broke, the brakes were not up to snuff.

Well generally speaking adding a bit of air in your tires can make marvels.Just look at your tires and inflate them the way they looked before you loaded your car.Just be absolutely sure to not exceed the tire max pressure under load. This is written on the side on all DOT approved tires. If you aren't hauling concrete sacks or lead ingots you should be able to haul most anything in a vehicle that fits in a vehicle. A few years ago I got a load of sand in my long bed '93 S-10, the truck scales at the quarry said I had 3000 lbs of sand in a truck that weighed 2500 lbs. Yeah the suspension was on the stops and the truck was only rated for a 1000 lb cargo but I drove 35 mph home, the brakes and tires were just fine. Do you find this valuable?

That's because all of those numbers have a high percentage of error to idiot-proof them. In engineering everything dealing with people is rated significantly lower than it's true maximum performance, which is why you can get away with 3000lbs of sand in a 1/2 ton pickup. I was waiting for you to jump on this thread! For a car unless you're loaded to the brim with ammo and food it should be alright, I've had my car jam packed with clothes and crap and it stayed well under the recommended weight. Do you find this valuable?

Yes, I learned that one in Engineering. Some things that have high human interference are given safety tolerances that could be half of what they can really tolerate, just because people are that dumb. Do you find this valuable?
