I have been thinking about getting a hi-point carbine but I am 19... don't you have to be 21 to buy one? and if not it uses pistol ammunition so I couldn't buy ammo for myself anyway... or am i wrong?

You should be able to since it is considered a rifle, and any one over 18 can buy any type of ammo., in most states.

"You should be able to since it is considered a rifle, and any one over 18 can buy any type of ammo., in most states."In Michigan you have to be 18 to buy rifle+shotshells, and you have to be 21 to purchase handgun ammunition....The gray area with the Hi-Point is the 9mm, .40S&W or .45ACP ammo, but if you tell the clerk that the ammo is for a rifle, at most stores they'll let you purchase it, a gunshow would probably be a better place to get deals on said ammo as well as not get hassled as much over it. "to bad the states don't have the same laws. but then again we'd have liberal states saying we can't own weapons aargggg"sorry about that just checking to mainly see if things were posting. terrain is a consideration in weapons choice, as well as tactics, Currently my loaners are AR's. Cheap an easy to use. but the terrain I live in is think brush, swampy or urban, So AR's fit the bill. Now if I lived in the west the AR's would be gone. An I would have Cemte's as loaners also would change the ptr's that I do have for long work to something with more range on them. Heck may do that anyway for mag compat an ammo supply reasons. I’m new to the group but just to throw in my 2 cents worth….I would go with an AK-47 variant given the constraints you described. A good example can be had for around $500 and the ammo is relatively inexpensive. The 7.62x39 can take most large game in North America so it covers the food collection adequately. It also has good knock-down power in a round that is still easily controlled in rapid fire, and it does a better job of punching through light cover than the 5.56x45. For a pure combat weapon the AR’s have better accuracy, much better ergonomics, and are usually better built than most AKs. The AR is more accurate than the AK but the AK is accurate enough and if you get one with a scope rail you can compensate for the crap open sights that come on the AK. With open sights you may never get tighter than a 4” group at 100yrd, but draw a 4” circle on the middle of your chest. How much more accurate do you have to be? The thing that tips it in favor of the AK is that we are talking about a survival gun and the AK’s were designed to keep working even when not properly maintained in conditions that would make any other gun seize up. The "Top 10" show on the military channel declared it the best combat rifle of all time, and one expert said, “when western civilization falls the weapon I want is an AK-47”. When all the support and maintenance equipment is gone the AK will keep working as long as you have ammo to feed it. My personal rifle is the DS Arms SA-58 Para-Congo, with 1.25-4x24 illuminated triangle reticle scope. Yes it was expensive, and it’s expensive to feed but I think my life and the life of my family is worth it. The rest of my arsenal is: Mossberg 500 Defender 12ga. Smith & Wesson 66 .357 Mag. 4” Barrel Springfield XD-40 They all sit in my “bug-out bag”, along with Tactical Vest, extra ammo, and back pack. Do you find this valuable? |

IF i randomly managed to run into about 2-2.5 grand, id buy myself a springfield M1A Super Match, and then put in an mcmillan tactical stock, a scope mount, and a little 3-9x scope. This weapon would be a GREAT multi-purpose gun. the .308 caliber is big enough to take deer at long ranges, as well as hostiles trying to steal your chickens, and it EVEN will blow the brains out of a ZED. The downside is you need after-market magazines because Springfield isn't manufacturing it's 20-rd clips for M1A's anymore, only 10-rounders. Beside that, you'd have a great all around gun, especially if you got a forward picatinny rail mount for a flashlight. HOWEVER, the odds of getting my 2-2.5 grand is slim to none, so I'll go with the Mini-14. ATI makes a great folding stock, comes with forward picatinny rails for mounting a flashlight and even a 7" rail for a scout rifle concept of forward mounting a "scout" scope if thats what youre going for. The .223 rd isnt HUGE, but it should suffice at killing deer to a hundred yards or so. itll kill a person at up to 500 (but i give it 200 max in all reality), and of course, zombies. all that will cost you JUST under a grand if youre a good shopper, that and now ruger is offering its 20-rd clips for CIVILIAN PURCHASE! ALSO, don't look simpley for the 7/62x39mm. its only good to 75 yards ish, and i personally believe that you should be watching more for hostile survivers and food source, as theyre more likely to give you trouble than ZEDs. the perk of the mini-14 is the hoard of aftermarket toys for it too.
