Recommended foods (by the Red Cross)
Nov 15 2008, 8:12 PM EST
Some conflicts in recommendation use your own judgment.Recommended foods (by the Red Cross) include: * Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables. (Be sure to include a manual can opener) * Canned juices, milk and soup (if powdered, store extra water). * High energy foods, such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars and trail mix. * Comfort foods, such as hard candy, sweetened cereals, candy bars and cookies. * Instant coffee, tea bags. * Foods for infants, elderly persons or persons on special diets, if necessary. * Compressed food bars. They store well, are lightweight, taste good and are nutritious. * Trail mix. It is available as a prepackaged product or you can assemble it on your own. * Dried foods. They can be nutritious and satisfying, but have some have a lot of salt content, which promotes thirst. Read the label. * Freeze-dried foods. They are tasty and lightweight, but will need water for reconstitution. * Instant Meals. Cups of noodles or cups of soup are a good addition, although they need water for reconstitution. * Snack-sized canned goods. Good because they generally have pull-top lids or twist-open keys. * Prepackaged beverages. Those in foil packets and foil-lined boxes are suitable because they are tightly sealed and will keep for a long time. Food Options to Avoid: * Commercially dehydrated foods. They can require a great deal of water for reconstitution and extra effort in preparation. * Bottled foods. They are generally too heavy and bulky, and break easily. * Meal-sized canned foods. They are usually bulky and heavy. * Whole grains, beans, pasta. Preparation could be complicated under the circumstances of a disaster. Do you find this valuable?

Information is information, use several sources and cross-check them against each other and your experience.

Spam is a great thing, y'all know that? It's portable, stays fresh HOURS after you open the can, it's edible cooked or not, it's great for trade, traps, bait, you can eat it for days on end and still love it [I can], Hormel foods hit the bullseye when they made Spam.

My favorites: Spam (Treat), Corn Beef, Can Chicken, Tuna (especially in pouch), Baked Beans, Hash, Chicken and Dumplings, Chunky Soup, Peaches, Pineapple, Mixed Fruit, Re-fried Bean, caned Oranges, can Potatoes, caned Olives, Breakfast Bars, Granola Bars, Oatmeal, Cookies (single serve), Crackers (single serve), caned Pasta, Rice, and any thing else I can find. I am not a picky eater! Hell I even like the eggs in MRE's, which most people don't like or makes them sick. I can eat them all day with no problem. Do you find this valuable? |

If you don't store food all is not lost, wild faring will work in most parts of the country. Insects, slugs, and worms are widely found and high in nutrients. Many plants are edible, but low in nutrients. Pine needles provide vitamin C. Sunlight helps your body make vitamin D. So remember you can survive washing down a handful of slugs and worms with a cup of pine tea, just remember to wash the dirt off first. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"So remember you can survive washing down a handful of slugs and worms with a cup of pine tea, just remember to wash the dirt off first."I think I'd rather have mealworms compared to the slugs. One, being I've had them before, and two, they even have "meal" in their name :) Do you find this valuable? |

Where I'm at slugs are very common, although I should try some to see if I'll like them first....Mealyworms are tasty, but I don't think they're present in Michigan.

I know they aren't the best, but I just want to make sure I'm not going to gag on them when nothing else is available. I'm doing more hunting, fishing, foraging and salvaging to get sustenance than munching on bugs, I'll tell y'all that right now. >:)

Insects are a lot easier to catch and more common than larger game, plus no season.

True, but as with any food, you'll get tired of eating it and it'd reduce morale. I'm eating whatever's available though, even if it's just slugs....But I'd prefer to eat some Perch and squirrel every now and then also.
