Blades, blunt objects, or guns?
Nov 30 2008, 2:26 PM EST
Which is more of your style? Throwing knives, combat knives, swords, hammers, crowbars? Or perhaps rifles, shotguns, etc.

This is sort of a silly question, i can understand the comparison of blunt vs. edged weapons. But firearms are the ideal overall weapon for a zday scenario. Now i wouldn't hesitate to carry a blade as a backup to my pistol and main gun, but it would probably get more tool use than weapon use.

If I have any say in the situation, I'd have 2 guns (Primary and secondary) and then a back-up bladed weapon, like a machete. I don't see the point in carrying a blunt object, seeing as how it has little practical use BESIDES knocking down doors and such. Also, for most blunt weapons to be effective in this respect, wouldn't they have to be heavy? I have a question for the general community though. Is a crowbar a blunt or bladed weapon?

i disagree with the heavy part, police batons aren't heavy and they seem to work pretty fucking well lol.As far is dual purpose goes i think the crowbar takes the cake, it'd have to be a good sized wrecking bar though, you can destroy a door just by hitting the latch, or by slipping the prong in the frame and pulling. i would just avoid using the hooked end as a point of impact, too much of a chance of it getting stuck. "i disagree with the heavy part, police batons aren't heavy and they seem to work pretty fucking well lol.Just a little side bar for this one... Police Officers and other Law Enforcement members are taught to strike for certain points of the anatomy. Places such as the Common Peroneal Nerve located on the lateral aspect of the leg will drop a person with one hit. We were taught NOT to hit anybody on the head, neck, groin or a joint. Now Zed is fair game. But the tactics we used against living persons may not be as effective, if at all, against Zed. I have no idea on how an ASP will perfowm against a cranium. Do you think it would bend over time? Does anybody have any knowledge on this aspect? I'll stick to my duel hulled titanium bat myself. At least it will float when I drop it in water. and you will drop it... ~Ironback 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

id prefer a whole lot of light weight swords to slice through Z's easy. id have a whole range of guns but what happens when all the world ammunition runs out? what happens when all the blades we use get too rusty to use??? we'd have to create some sort of (this is sort of me and ma friends idea) new weaponry range using some sort of chemical found in the ground, its like a crystal but is stored with massive amounts of weaponry, only problem is its rare so it will be hard to make the weapons. i have the basic plans so if you want them msg me and we'll trade emails. Also i think that, how many kinds of zombies will there be, will there be just zombies? i don't think so, there'll be more than just zombies. there'll be creatures with unspeakable power and flying zombie type ghouls that will make plane flying almost useless. 0 out of 4 found this valuable. "what happens when all the blades we use get too rusty to use??? "If you take of your tools and weapons they will take care of you. I have blacksmith tools that belonged to my wifes grandfather. Like anything else , use it, clean it, oil it, store it. How often has an auto mech had his tools get so rusty he can't use them? and his life is not depending on them. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Would a police baton really be effective against the undead? If all the nerves are shot, (not working) then would you be able to take out a Zed by hitting a nerve cluster? Also, i'm pretty sure you can't kill a skin-job with one hit from a baton. I wouldn't want to have to get in there for more than one strike. I'm not saying that they're totally useless. It just wouldn't be my first (or second) choice of blunt weapon.

I think it was Andy who posted something on another thread about asp's having an impact of like 2,000 psi, although my memory could be foggy.i think a tonfa, or side baton would be very effective also. Do you find this valuable? |

14. Distance and avoidance...
Dec 13 2008, 8:12 PM EST
If unable to maintain a goodly distance away from Unkle Zed, I would hope that being able to be in a place to avoid Undead Band would be possible.Being thrust into what is essentially a Close Quarters Combat situation with beings that feel no known source of pain, and cannot be stopped with reason is not this mean_old_man's idea of "fun". On a Job in area where Unkle Zed is, combination of arms and tools according to what we think we'll need. Shot longgun, shortgun, and for me, a good crows foot bar in the 4-5 foot length would be a good part of my loadout. Eyes open and mind ready to make decisions fast, keeping the undead far away is my preferences. Will leave the glory hounding and purposeful bashing of zombies to the younger and faster running children. They'll need the experiences they missed by living through Panics and ZWars. dont get close and stick with guns lower chances of you or loved ones getting bit carry a straight knife not edged because it could get stuck in flesh.

a straight knife has the same potential to get stuck like an curved one does (i'm assuming by "edged" you meant curved).I keep hearing people talk about blades "getting stuck" its not like the blade is going to get so wedged into a bone that its tough to move out, there isn't any bones in the body short of the skull and femurs that are going to be thick enough to get a blade stuck, and even then it would be near impossible for it to happen unless you have a particularly thin blade. Anyone who's seen the orginal dawn of the dead will know how handy a screwdriver is for getting rid of a zombie - shove it in it's ear and it goes straight to the brain for an instant death.Mind you I would'nt go out my way to kill zombies in this manner, simply if it has a hold of me.For casual encounters a golf club would suffice for getting them out the way.

" I have no idea on how an ASP will perfowm against a cranium. Do you think it would bend over time? Does anybody have any knowledge on this aspect? "I don't know either, but if I need to crush a skull I think I'd avoid any tool that was specifically engineered to be non-lethal. I'm not saying it can't be done with an asp or baton, but there are far better tools available for the job. Do you find this valuable? |

Also, any bone offers the chance of momentary sticking, and a moment might be enough. Do you find this valuable? |
