Only one line of defense? What a shame....
Dec 18 2008, 1:02 AM EST
Having a walled fortress is great. I would have to go out on a limb and say one of the most valuable things for a survivalist group trying to start a colony, however a fortress will fall if you design it to. If you are building from scratch or have time on your hands I would suggest looking at Mideval castles. They had several walls and other obstacles for defenses. If you are fortifying a building do what you can. Use debris to form makeshift walls and obstacles around the entire building and if you can't build up dig down. Create a small declining ditch that leads to a very steep incline surrounding your fortress so zombies cannot reach the top. Once that is done look to other means of defense such as erecting walls or the use of funneling mazes which will create a narrow path toward your gun nests and even after all this fails have the back up plan to escape if necessary. Dig a tunnel from a soft point in your fortress somewhere outside, if you have time that is or modify a vehicle and go out Dawn of The Dead style.

My fortress would be an abandoned building with barriers and stuff OUTSIDE AND AROUND it, AS WELL AS the top 3 floors COMPLETELY sealed off from the rest of the building via gangster ass welding job, AND I'd cut the stair well out of the 3rd from the top floor, giving the zombies no way to even reach me and my team, and even IF they did (which would be damn near impossible from the start), they'd have to get through a metal wall, and if they got through THAT, they'd have to deal with Delta Floor team which would be guarding the metal wall from the inside at ALL hours, and if THEY couldn't hold them off, we'd evacuate to the roof. Actually we'd have already evacuated everyone as soon as we heard the zombies banging on the wall. But if they got through Delta team, we'd cross a bridge onto a backup rooftop and then "raise" the bridge, leaving them stranded on the roof. We'd then kill them as best we could, Alpha team would go down the backup escape from backup roof and clear out the main building again if possible. But for ANY of that to happen we'd have to had already messed up somewhere earlier in the plan, which ain't happenin. Is that too confusing?

There will the the two container thick outer wall, about 3 stories high and with sniper holes on the top floor, and within the inner wall will be a 2 story high redoubt between the habs (empty containers with emergency food and cots, 2 survivors per hab) and the outer wall. These containers will be filled with sand from a nearby beach to resist bullets it raiders and persistent, fist pounding zombies. Not to mention, each habitat can be locked to protec those who live inside, as a third line of defense. Do you find this valuable? |

outter defence: simple earth wall or chain link fencemile or so distance to mid def. mid defence: concrete, brick, other hard building mat. 1000 feet to inner def 7x7 (high and deep) moat then a double wall (two walls with space in between and connected on top buildings within inner wall should have retractable stairs/ladders to prevent complete over run bug out plan: vehichles with mine flail-esque devices on front, chops up zed with power from engine, should make it an easier trip. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. how are you going to get all the materials for that?lets see, that would be a minimum of 12800(pie) x ____ ft (tall) of earth wall/chain link fence 2000(pie) x height worth of concrete/brick/other strong building material, and a hell of a lot more. I just did calculations for a living space of less than a couple of cm. You do the math, that is a lot more resources than you will be able to come across easily. Good Luck Do you find this valuable? |

true but where you can just buil you dig a hole then use that earth to build a wall so the wall is as tall as the mote is deep and the wall is high

Here is my thoughts.Draw it out on paper, or go and download SketchUp and do everything to scale. You will see what I mean. Sorry, It gets me really annoyed when people don't think realistically. This is why i suggest that you go in and d your math when you think of a plan. The hole actually seems smarter on the outside as well as the inside. then you plant things on the inside... So much you could do, but you just have to remember to keep it realistic. Do you find this valuable? |

Well the time/cost factors in when you are talking pre or post Zday. You can build anything pre-Z as long as you have enough time, but you will have to pay for materials. Post-Z you can steal, scavenge, so cost is nothing, but time will be a factor in your survival. You need a small fort whilst building your bigger fort. And you need time and materials for that, too.Don't forget the costs go down when you are constructing in bulk. One cinder block might be $2, but 100,000 would not cost you $200,000. Bulk discount from the supplier would make them a little over $64,000. Hell, you can always buy a block maker, use it, then sell it when you are done. It might take you weeks to construct an earth mound if you are using a shovel. So rent a bulldozer and it will take you a day. Plus, you get to drive a bulldozer. Do you find this valuable? |

but honestly, multiple miles of wall (chainlink or earthen)multiple mile of hard defensive structures then a moat with walls on both sides (again miles long) and what is probably going to be several miles worth of town inside that is going to take a lot more scavenging post z-day. and is going to cost hundreds of thousands if not millions pre z-day Do you find this valuable? |

this is based on if i owned a mid evil castlemy first line of defence will be a 15' deep trench a little bit bigger than the perimeter of my land. [built pre zday]. my bridge to cross the trench will have explosives riged so when i see the zeds, the bridges will be non exsistent. and because it is a castle it will already have the giant gate, the portcullus, a moat. and if the zeds make it through the gate then bot of the portculluses go down and thay r trapped in, giving me and my buddies time to shoot them throw rocks at them ect. if they made through that , i would have them raise the draw bride from the moat , soo the only way to get in from there would be for zombies to swim across the moat, and climb up the little tunnel that leads to the toilet seat , and that bathroom wouldnt even be used, so we would just put a wall in were the door frame was, if they made it through that, which they wouldnt , i would go into the dongeon into the cell filled with guns ammo, and alot of food and lock my self in it and fight it out with the zombies... hopfully ill make it through because that would be unfair if they got through a wall Do you find this valuable? |

"outter defence: simple earth wall or chain link fenceyeah, but all that armour would weigh it down. & the fuel to power those devices would take up space & waste travelling fuel. what my advice is, you wait until the zombie go to another side, than you escape i n bikes. you will be able t outrun the zombies in a bike, & it is less likely to break. you can also quickly escape from a bike & hop off for combat.
