Can Zombies Swim?

What a great question. My guess is that they won't be able to swim. 24  out of 36 found this valuable. Do you?

I would say no also. However, since they are kind of already DEAD, and probably don't really require air (zed physiology requirement is undocumented, true), then I would suggest that they could simply walk along the bottom of whatever body of water they needed to cross, and emerge on the other side.
IMO

All Creatures No matter how big or small (including viruses) have a survival instinct for this reason i think they would be able to swim in some capacity. I dont think it will be anything more than a basic paddle but with enough time (if they dont starve or get eaten first) they could move across a considerable body of water. 11  out of 23 found this valuable. That would depend on too many variables really.

Assume that they do for maximum preparation.

zombies could never walk across certain parts of the ocean, the pressure would crush them flat. That and animals would feed on them the entire way. but like Hitman said assume the worst to prepare for the best 13  out of 15 found this valuable. Do you?

Swim? No. They just do the "Dead-Man Float." Obvious question is, then, is, "How do you make a Zombie float?" Reply: "Just add ice cream." 17  out of 19 found this valuable. Do you?

Ha Ha Ha! Zombie Float. Don't forget the Cherry.

I don't think that they would float. I think that they would fill with water.

The water would get in them threw their mouths, nose, or wounds.

No, Zombies cannot swim in the sense that we can. They can however wade through water, even if it is over their heads. Their limited motor/sensory capacity constrains their movements to redundant acts of motion. Do not however underestimate them, even in situations where you are using water as part of a defensive strategy. What they lack in dexterity, they make up for with sheer mindless determination.

Remember: The only good Zombie is a dead Zombie!!

What about gas byproducts from the decay?
Dead persons tend to float.

Well i believe they will not float. Due to the fact that they will have no air within their bodies to keep them afloat. Dead people only float for a couple of hours before the lungs and bodies fill with water then they sink to the bottom. However, zombies walking underwater is completely possible. Seeing as they do not need to breath. The water will fill their lungs and bodies, they will sink and begin to walk on the bottom. Pressure would not effect them cause, they have no inner pressure inside of their lungs. water can flow freely through the body and some parts of their body may be destroyed but for the most part they will stay intact. 9  out of 12 found this valuable. Except when there skulls get crushed from pressure that is. But yes,the undead couldn't float, but could wade at certan depths.
I say your safe as long as you stay away from lakes, beachs, etc.

Have you ever seen a carcass that has been dumped into the water? They get all bloated up and stay on the surface.

yes i have seen a carcass that was dumped into the water. I used to live in a bad area in upper new jersey near new york and trust me i have seen my share of dead bodies.

The reason why they are all bloated up is the air is trying to escape from the body. Due to drowning the stomach and throat are filled with water and there is no room for the air to escape. after awhile the bodies decrease in size due to the air escaping water fills the body up and they sink to the bottom.

Actually the skull would not be crushed. Your skull has open parts near the mouth and nose. If you ever look at a skull you will see the open parts in the front of the face. That is were the nose is placed. Now, due to the lack of feeling pain for zombies, their noses would crush and water would shoot into their brain to equalize the pressure. Mind you, it is highly unlikely that this can happen. Even if out of 100,000 zombies 1 of them makes it all the way. That 1 can start the infection all over again. And im not even going to go into zombies walking on the bottom of oceans and falling into underground caves

A zombie shot that many times typically is a non-issue.
