Possible fortification

Just thought of a possible fortification, sounds like a good idea but I would like some other points of view.
The location is a decommissioned destroyer located in Galveston, Texas. It survived Ike and Rita, taking no damage. It is berthed on it's own little island that is shielded by Galveston from the ocean. Location is complete with a pier and large visitor center.
Here is a link for anyone that wants to check it out: http://www.hnsa.org/ships/stewart.htm
I am sure that all the weaponry is also non-operational so that's not an issue. The ship and the submarine are also open to the public, and are rarely locked down.

you have to think about food, fuel, defence from zombies as well as humans looking for the same thing as you, shelter.

even the most powerful boats, they need upkeep, then where would you run too if they managed to get onboard, lots of small corridors looking the same, if there is no light, in the dark, strange echos.

what refrigeration is there for food, storage, (that shouldnt be a problem as its big). how to get food for weeks or months there. Does it have its own generator, thats where you need the fuel for, could you be locking yourself into a sealed unit with no route for escape if the worst happens.

Yea I thought about it a little after posting and realized my initial plan was probably the better way to go. Although I still think holing up in an old destroyer is bad ass. Maybe it was the novelty of the idea that attracted me. Do you find this valuable?

its not a bad idea, a few logistical problems, it is defensible, maybe as a back up, or a temporary place. short term it could work, long term not really.

if you are elsewhere and its on your way to your safe area, then or even as a regrouping station, that would work best of all. i have at least 3 backups, for me, prisons are one, and old nunneries we have a few convents here, big walls, not as good but, will do at a push,

you dont want human scavengers to know where you are, so give them that as part of the link in you travelling. and it could work.

He is no longer a member, he's been posting like this on every thread. I already deleted a post he made on this one. He's was trying to push his video on You tube but now he's Banned.

Oh definitely short term, I was trying to think of a way to avoid the panic that is going to be everywhere within the Houston area during Z day. I figured since it is an isolated island, that is reachable by boat (there is also a 2 lane bridge on the opposite part of the island) it would be a good place to go until things calmed down enough to move safely, say a week or two. Couldn't be any worse than camping and with the stairs removed it is unreachable. Do you find this valuable?

yes, i have speant nearly 20 years working out my routes, saw dawn of the dead in the late 80's, early 90's. used to go to fort worth a few times, didnt see much in the way of safe zones. but didnt see much there.. its got to be a habit now, where can i run, what can be defended.
