Site Back-up

I am currently saving the whole website (including all relevant external links) to my external HDD. I was wondering if the Admins could possibly save copies of any pages before they are deleted, then allow users to download the redundant pages.

I see that the "Tree Fort" page was deleted. I actually think that if it was managed properly, it would give a greater insight into woodland survival, or jut an extra lookout post etc. I recently got Writer status, so will be creating a new "tree-fort" page (probably added onto the defensible locations page)

Basically, I just want to make sure that any information that you get rid of, is put up for download for 1 month beforehand. thanks.

Well, it was under the weapons categories. I guess I can bring it back and write it up. Do you find this valuable?

As a normal ol' member, I think that's a cool idea. I'm betting lots of others would like that option, too.
Bravo.
I vote yes, since I haven't been here for long, and there are probably pages that I would contribute to that might have alread been deleted even before I started my membership.
That way, mods weed out all the redundant pages forever, and keep pages that are relevant and neccesary without members losing out on some good info.

One very big thing though.......we're in the middle of a massive rehaul.
That means lots of moved pages, condensed and combined info, so backing up right now would be a bad idea.

No Worries. I'll be doing this on a monthly basis from now on. I'll only ever have 2 versions of the site stored on my HDD, that way I can compare and splice them together into my own "ZSDW Database" which I will update on a monthly basis too.

Infact, at the end of each year, I can make the database available for download to all the members of this site.

I've finished backing up the whole ZSDW site and it took 1 day, 3 hours, 27 minutes. it is a total of 2.4Gb.

I expect that after condensing and splicing a few months worth of info togeher, I can bring the site into a concise, yet informative and entertaining, database of around 300-500Mb.

You must remember that a lot of this site is external links, threads, pictures and other graphics, member profiles (I have every member profile saved on my HDD now....eeeeek) and stuff like that. we only need hard topics and relevant pictures to illustrate said points.

I think that by late sping, this site will be looking WAY better and I may even have a mid-year preview of the database ready to show the Admins.

Burn it to DVD... :)

I used HTTPTrack and got about the same amount with links, pics and assorted references.

UgghhhHhhhh.. Lotta work and space to get a first, rough cut.

Will be interesting to see what you come up with, love to see other's ideas and opinions on things like you've got in mind.

Again, appreciated!

I too have a copy in my documents in case anything goes wrong. I'm pretty sure Wetpaint would also ahve a copy of a site as large as ours. Do you find this valuable?
