I'd buy one, my spear I bought at ESTRELLA (a medieval reenactment war). It's made from over a quarter inch of armor plate on a oak shaft. It will go through car hoods and steel 50 gallon oil barrels.

But spears are rather useless in general combat with Zombies, but if you must....it needs to be able to be pulled out of meat and bone without coming off the shaft. It needs a bolt through the wood and a solid band around the wood.

I know some traditional hunters that go boar spearing, and some people still go bear spearing (it's a totally different type of spear and in my opinion is stupidly dangerous to spear a bear) so I'd look at some professional spears before making one.

The boar spear will pierce the skull without over sticking as the guard will stop it. Then practice, join the local SCA (sca.org) and start training with a mock spear, and do it in a area where spearing the face is legal.

Go by your local home improvement store, check out the garden tool handles for the haft. Find one with a hole drilled in the end, look for one about 3/8 inch. Go over to the concrete section and look for some pre-cut rebar about the same size as the hole, or look in the nail section for a large spike about the size of the hole. Put them together with some epoxy or hot glue, point the rebar of spike and you have a spear. Reinforce the wood at the working end by wrapping wire around it tightly and more glue, fabricate a guard from some flat stock. 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

"Where can i find GOOD material for making a spear?"
What I did for my spear, was use an axe handle. I figure due to the fact it was built to withstand thousands of hits, it would make a great spear handle. I took an old survival knife blade that had come apart from the handle, and put that into the gap at the top of the handle. Filled it all in with metal epoxy to secur it in. I drilled a hole in the opposite side and put a broken golf club I had(again using metal epoxy to secur it) to use as a counter balance, and also a back up club. Then I made the handles for it. You must have some crazy sweaty palms.

I go through a full bush cord every winter and I've never "lost" an axe.

Also, you might wanna consider buying yourself a splitting maul. Works far better when chopping firewood.

I would think a naginata would be a more versatile weapon. Slashing and stabbing etc. Do you find this valuable?

i think to make a decent spear i would make a custom shaft and have a machete for the blade,it may be shit for stabing but it would be good for chopping Do you find this valuable?

The point of a spear is to stab. The point of a machete is to chop. Splicing the two will just make it suck at both.

My dad has a tool that looks like a giant nail and is about as long as I am tall. It also weighs a ton so I wouldn't bring it unless I was defending a hall way then I would use it but man I'd tire fast.

The handles have a really good grip. They're made out of leather lace, and there's no slip when you grab ahold of them. When I hold it, I usually position one on the back grip, and one behind the front grip.

It's called a polearm and it's actually pretty good.

ever here of a naginata... :D
its the japanese version of what your talking about, both are awsome but the naginata is cooler looking.
however i think that the one that you are talking about could use some help for stability,
1) if the machetes blade goes through the handle remove the handle.
2) get a good light but very durable pipe so that the "new" handle of the machete can fit snuggly.
3) stick the machete in one end intil the handle point is gone into the pipe.
4) drill a few holes at the center of the pipe and through the machetes thin side.
5) get a big metal wire so that it will fit through the holes barely and then wrap it around and around intill you got none left now put wood with slits in the sides so that it can be placed along side the machete to stabilize it.
6) now add culk to any gap inside the bladed end.
7) and to finish up you add electrical tape around the entire thing and then duct tape the end to make it hold together as a precation.

now that is a pretty stable homemade polearm. :D
but i would not reckamend using it as a main defense because as unlikely as the blade is to brake it could and would be close to impossible to repair, so you would have to make another one.

I would point out that both the polearm and the naginata are shaped for their purpose and treated to procedures that strengthen the overall. I'm not knocking those weapons. I'm knocking the spear-shaft spliced onto machete idea.
