Why are we fascinated?

I think we are fascinated by the realm of possibility, and specifically how it applies to us. It is to some degree a daydream or fantasy where we become gods, in a sense--handing out life or death by letting survivors in or keeping them out, planning to destroy legions of undead foes from the safety of our fortresses, and surviving against all odds against vastly more numerous forces. It also gives us a humorous way to plan for the worst, and it lets us imagine a radically different world, a change in the social structure and the way humanity goes about its business. And it never hurts to be prepared... Do you find this valuable?

I read a cool quote a while back that sums it up for me.

We're not just afraid of predators, we're transfixed by them, prone to weave stories and fables and chatter endlessly about them, because fascination creates preparedness, and preparedness, survival. In a deeply tribal sense, we love our monsters. E. O. Wilson.
