The Siren Strategy

A while back, I was having a discussion over, guess what, zombies. This conversation was with my brother and sister - they claimed they had devised a strategy that could eliminate several zombies in a multi-mile-round area. I didn't believe them, and I'll be damned if their plan doesn't have some merit.Essentially, a group would be assembled, preferably sappers and marksmen. They would travel to the nearest tornado siren. Before I go any further, it's obviously necessary that the group in question must have knowledge enough to know how to activate the siren (depending on where the siren is activated from, a second team may be necessary, and this other unit must have good communication with the other in order to prevent premature activation). You can probably guess the plan: set up sniping positions, build traps, activate the siren, and wait. Zombies, drawn to sound as they are, would inevitably follow the noise.Once in range, marksmen could pick them off. The siren could be kept running for several days until the amount of contacts lowers. Comments? 6 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

That actually doesn't sound half bad, and I think with some work you can devise several good defenses with the siren. One caveat though, is that if the siren is run from the power grid, and the power is out you won't be able to use it. Some things to think about: 1) Do you have enough ammo to be spending it in this way? 2) Are there other sirens around town? Make sure they aren't connected before you set one off -- you may end up blowing someone else's spot up and getting them swarmed. 3) How will you use the sirens once the power goes out? Other thoughts : * May be a good idea to send out messengers to alert other survivor groups in the area of what you plan. Make sure they don't mistake your actions for the arrival of rescue -- otherwise you have just set up a buffet for the zeds. * Sirens might actually be a good way to communicate with your neighbors. * The military makes a hand siren for chemical alert that sounds very similar to the ones you are talking about, but you hold in your hand and crank them. I'm not sure how hard it would be to get ahold of, but seems like it would also be useful -- even as a base alarm or something. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

If the sirens are unavailable, or you aren't in tornado alley, just stick a few people and a loudspeaker/bullhorn/stereo on top of something.Bingo, instant lure, which could also double as a shooting position 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

That would be a terrific idea, except also consider that places with those sirens tend to be larger, and so the larger a place, is the more zombies. Which, in turn means you might run out of bullets. BUT! You, have planned it so you would be properly prepared, so I'd guess you'd have a large stockpile of weapons ready to kill zombies.A good idea would be to dig a sort of moat, minus the water. They'd all come running (or shambling) towards your location, only to fall down a large hole, potentially breaking bones if said hole is large enough. Though the zombies would pile up eventually and get across, but what if you made two holes eh? Also consider filling the holes with a flammable substance and burning the hole when its about full so then itll free up space to eventually get more zombies in. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Another idea is to have teams standing by with a few rolls of wire/ chain link fence and when they get to the trap, just run circles around them and fence them in. It wouldn't hold them for long, but probably long enough to set them on fire. Saves the ammo at least. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Also how would you get enough substance to burn the zeds in the holes. And to burn some thing that big could cause massive harm to those around, 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Siren? Why not just a car alarm? You could even drive around honking the horn and lead them back. You don't have to worry about the power grid that way.

Car batteries in most cars will be dead in a month or two without running, unless its a newer battery - then you've got a little longer. Long as you did it in the time frame, a car horn would serve as a decent siren.I think one of those old handcrank sirens like the Brits used in WWII would be where it's at - no power needed and portable. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Well, the main flaw is you are trapped. I know from airsoft and paintball experience that you'll be distracted by 1-2enemies, and turn to find the horde waiting to kill you....When I hunt zombies, I plan to have a balance of scouts (lightly armed, .22's and that crap) and assaults ( .223,12 gauge, .30 comblok,.45,etc.). the scouts will run up to about 30 feet, and kill as many as they can until assaults arrive, and then clean up. 1 out of 5 found this valuable. However, setting up a well orchastrated hit that is well planned and thought out would make them come to you and eliminate the danger of being taken by surprise. This post gets a thumbs up from Ol' Timber. Do you find this valuable? |

I love this plan's realism and balance of simplicity (not two sentences, not an obscenly intricate operation utilizing technology that 99% of us wouldn't even be able to try and use, etc). And the siren idea would definitely be a possibility, seeing as most town fire departments still have a extremely loud siren. Though the risk of the operation would make me doing it on a daily-ish basis less than intelligent, it could be great for clearing out the majority of zombies around your stronghold or for distracting them while you make a supply run. Good thinking!

"If you change the words "scouts" and "assaults" to dudes and guys all you've managed to say is, "I plan to have some dudes and guys with some guns. The dudes will run up to about 30 feet and kill as many as they can until the guys arrive and kill the rest". Without the fancy discriptions for people all you've managed to say is your going to run up and shoot some zombies. BRILLIANT!!! Why didn't everyone else think of that. Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks for the comments, guys. I was thinking - the surrounding shooters would need some type of hearing protection. Shooting muffs may do the trick.Nice ideas, especially from inudude. I hadn't thought of using it as a distraction. I like it. Do you find this valuable? |

I think this is a great idea, of course there would most likely be stragglers left in the city afterward. I'd also have claymore or something around the base of the siren, once a crowd gathers BAM! Something similar to this idea would be a building(multistory skyscraper), sound an alarm several stories up maybe have a manikin doused in pee or sweat(for the scent) as bait, then level the building, or pick them off as they enter the doorway, or light the building on fire.

Its somehow perfect as a giant trap- the more time you had, the more you could improve the security of the facility, set out traps etc. Like it.

I have a good version of this...The defense site I would like to use (in an optimum setting) is an abandoned stone walled fort in the north-eastern quadrant of Florida. 40 foot cochina walls are zombie proof, bullet proof, and fire proof. We stand on the wall and make noise (a friend has an antiquated hand-crank siren). Another option would be to use a car battery and upgraded stereo system. Once enough zombies gather around, we simply drop napalm (easy enough to make) down the walls into the PREDUG MOAT and ignite it with a handful of molotovs. Wait for the flames to die, lather, rinse, repeat... Of course, if we can't make it to that site, I have several back-up sites, but none with the easy-clean-up potential inherent in this one. Do you find this valuable? |
