Four blade Caltrops
Mar 16 2009, 7:22 PM EDT
I do not know how effective caltrops will be on Zeds but in the event of raiders they'll be a handy thing to have a bag of.My simple to make caltrops involves a one hundred count package of replacement utility razors, some superglue, and an epoxy resin kit. You will notice that the utility blades have a pair of notches on the back. Take four of the utility blades and join them at the notches in a " # " and secure them with superglue After the glue sets, mix together the epoxy and use it to reinforce the joins in the device. is that somthing like a chakramohh and most utility knives have spare blades in them (some you have to take the knife apart and some just have a lever) for those that were wondering. a chakram is a circular blade ment for throwing (like the shuriken but instead of points it has a sharp round edge. caltrops are basically multipointed spikes that are shaped so when they land there is always a point facing upwards. The idea is you would litter a road or path to prevent pursuers from following. They are less of a weapon and more of a distraction method.

"It's a ninja thing.A skin job could be fairly easily maimed by a caltrop. Military expierience shows that an enemy that has impaired movement is a significantly weaker one. By the way,, pirates used caltrops as well, or tools similar to them. Do you find this valuable? |

Never seen one. It sounds like a nail jack. Something union coal miners used to use to sabatoge roads when they were on strike. You take two pole barn nails bend them at a 45 degree angle, sharpen the nail head, lay one across the other, weld and you got yourself a nail jack. No matter how you toss them they land with a sharp point sticking up. Probably wouldn't hurt a zombie but it'd make a clicking sound every time he took a step.

I think with new footwear it might be a waste of time to make them, plus once one person discovers them (painfully) the rest can just be kicked away presenting a hazard to you later.

"I think with new footwear it might be a waste of time to make them, plus once one person discovers them (painfully) the rest can just be kicked away presenting a hazard to you later."You are missing the point about these. they are an annoyance weapon. yeah a modern foot soldier could walk around them or kick them away. However you can't take a horse down that road, or a car. The concept of caltrops is like having marked minefields. Its to either severely slow down, or deter the enemy from taking that route. you don't litter a few feet of road, you litter like 30 yards of road with them. Place them far enough away from your base that if a raider tries to speed through them, their momentum won't carry them far enough forward, slowing them down enough for you to engage them from a distance. "You are missing the point about these.Caltrops when used in a land based enviroment are a type of 'are denial device' that can halt or at least slow down an enemy. They can also be used as outright defenses, or asan active force to channel a larger body of enemies into a position that compromises their security. Caltrops are most effective at night or in heavily wooded areas when they are in these roles, aiding in the prevention of them being 'kicked away', as it's harder to see them. Or...Weld a large nail to a fist sized metal sphere. Make it so that the nail is at laest 8" long and sticking out from the sphere at a 90* angle. One inch below the tip of the nail you file in a barb. Now burry the ball so that at least 2" of the nail are also under ground with the remaining 6" to include the barbed portion sticking straight up. What good is this you may ask. Well do NOT do this in the middle of a road. Burry them in large numbers in overgrown grass surrounding your compound. Space them no more than 3' away from one another. You can also run fishing line between them that leads down into your compound's security room. Have them attatched to some empty soda cans with pebbles in them. That way when they shake they will make just enough noise for the sentry to hear. Raiders and such will be screaming their heads off. I don't care if you have a steel shank in your boot. How many of you have actually tore one out and looked at it? The ones made now adays are cheap and thin. You come down on that sharp barb with 200+ pounds of pressure and I'll guarentee a puncture. No raider will be that close and trying to sneak up. By the time they are close enough to be in the effected area they will probably be doing fire team rushes if they have any military training. "I'm up, they see me I'm dow... AHHH! WTF is this sticking into my thigh and chest! Help, I can'y get u.." *BANG* One dead raider. Zombies will just be stuck, or rip their foot off and then fall on more of the spikes thus enabling themselves totaly immobile. You can go out during the daylight hours and clean up. Just make sure you drag your feet and don't trip. Just my .02 ont he subject. Enjoy. ~Ironback Do you find this valuable? |

My method is for long term and meant to actually immobilize the enemy long enough for you to ventilate thier cranium. Do you find this valuable? |
