Large Arsenal Good or Bad?
Mar 19 2009, 11:13 AM EDT
Is building a large arsenal of guns, ammunition, and other gear a Good or Bad thing? Is it really worth spending a lot of money to buy a lot of guns and ammunition. What guns do you suggest for people to go and buy, and why? I personally think that a good arsenal would be 4 to 5 guns. I would only have that many if there were uses for them. 3 of the 5 guns I own I use for hunting. 1) Mossburg 500 deer slayer & turkey barrel, 12 gauge, 5 round, (deer, turkey, duck, quail, Pheasant). 2) Marlin .22, 15 round tube mag., (small game). 3) Hawk .50 Black powder rifle, (deer). The other 2 are more sentimental but still use full: 1) Mossburge special purpose, 12 gauge, 8 round, (belonged to a friend that passed in a car accident). 2) Colt 1911, (my Dad's Marine issue from Vietnam). 6 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you?

If the guns you mentioned are firearms you've used for a while and they are what your used to, buy ammo for them and leave it at that. Everything you've mentioned except for the blackpowder rifle. I'm sorry, just can't accept them for anything other than hunting. Your Mossberg and Marlin will fill in that gap. A Colt 1911 is a good handgun, clean it up and it'll take care of business. You gotta decide if your traveling by car, on foot, or staying put. If you take off with your BOB on your back your going to have to make some hard choices and eliminate what you just don't need. I'd grab the Moss 500 and the 1911 if I was headed out and knew I was never coming back. If you packed plenty of game loads your 500 will feed you, add some slugs and shot and it'll protect you. That 1911 would be your backup and a damn good one too. The Marines picked that handgun and round for a reason. Its designed to kill. So to answer your question I would't buy a damn thing other than ammo. Not what you were looking for I'm sure but I'm a firm believer that your skills with weapons are more important than the weapons.

I think the first gun should be a nice riffle with a scope, something you can use from a roof top and shooting bulls-eyes from 150 yards away. If I had my choice in a personal (zombie) arsenal I would have: A scoped riffle, a 12 gauge shotgun ( I feel this is a very under rated zombie gun ) and great handgun with a huge clip, and an assault riffle.

Variety is the spice of life and bane of the undead. Have at least several weapons. You don't have to be a gun collector, but owning several weapons in several popular calibers will only help to serve you better. There are idiots here that will say just have one and become proficiant with it. Bullshit. Have several, shoot them on a semiregular baisis, and presto, you are pretty good with several fire arms. Getting proficiant with say a 10-22 is great. But if you have to move to say a mini-14 because of ammo issues, the kick would knock off your aim and make you uncomfortable with it. That means death. So, become accustomed to several firearms and then there will be no suprises.

Provided you can practice with said guns, a large arsenal isn't bad..

A Mossburg 500 and a Colt definitely seem to fit that requirement though, so you should have no worries. Do you find this valuable? |

"My dream collection, including the two that I own (the first two) would be:Your off to a good start. I like a lot of your choices for future purchases too. Now let me ask you this: If you had all those weapons stocked up at your base and needed to head out in a hurry without a vehicle to haul them in how many would you take? Which ones would you take? Would you pick guns that shot the same ammo? Would you choose a multi-purpose weapon? No matter what your answer I'd be worried about you if you said all of them. Do you find this valuable? |

There are personal opinions over the appropriate size and content of an arsenal, but I think the ammunition issue is a no brainer. Stockpiling ammo makes economic sense. In my personal experience except for minor fluctuations I've never seen ammo prices go anywhere but up. If no zombie outbreak occurs over the course of your lifetime you'll shoot up a lot of ammo anyway, even if only at the range. If you can afford to buy it all now you save some money in the long run. Assuming its stored correctly its got a hell of a shelf life. I still use WWII US military surplus ball ammo you buy in a 600 round case in my .45 for target practice and in the few thousand rounds of it I've fired so far, I've never hit a dud round yet. You're talking ammo thats close to 70 years old at this point, so stockpiling stuff you buy off the shelf and putting it up for 10 or 20 years as a cost saving measure/insurance plan it makes perfect sense. You can always just resell the ammo if you change guns or calibers.Do you find this valuable? |

If you have the money buy the weapons. I have sensible weapons Mossberg 500, Bushmaster ARs in 5.56 & 7.62, Kimber 1911-45ACP, Taurus 9mm, Ruger SP 101 357, IMI .40. I also have a ton of dumb shit FN Herstal 5.7, Bushmaster Bull-Pup just for a few. The point first get the three most important firearms a rifle, shotgun, and handgun after that buy what you can when you can.

Depends on what you can store, carry, and use effectively. If you are walking, or biking, or something like that, I wouldn't recommend carrying more than 2 long guns and a pistol. If you are in a car, maybe no more than 5 or 6 per person. If you are in a base, hell, keep as many as you want. But don't go and buy a 20-gun arsenal and practice with five of them. Even the best gun in the world don't mean shit when you don't know how to use it. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Is building a large arsenal of guns, ammunition, and other gear a Good or Bad thing?I wouldnt buy so many guns as i would ammunition and mags. If you are a regular civilian, buy a 12 g shotgun, and tons of shells. If you have your pistol permit then get a 1911, if you cant afford one go for Taurus or Glock. Get about 8 to 10 mags for those. If your military, carry around 10-15 mags for your rifle, and 8-10 mags for yourpistol. make sure to get some molle or at least something to carry your mags and dump them. Both really:Given that you have proper security for your weapons, its a good thing. In my mind buying firearms is like collecting comics.. As long as you take good care of them.. or simply buy them to keep and store them. Ive had my share of tough times and I've had to let go of some. Now I'm going to look into this but I've been reading about the rules of an IRA (Individual Retirement Account) and it does mention collectibles I would like to check into buying collectible firearms and use that as a tax writeoff.. anywho I have to check into the rules. And some modern military firearms have collector status. Why give money to Uncle Sam?.. use it to buy guns! :) I value a gun way more than a chunk of gold. IMHO.. Do you find this valuable? |

If ammo is a concern you should really look into reloading. It is more economical than you can immagine. If you are looking at large quanities of ammo you will save hundreds of dollars. I load alot of different calibers and just love it. A real money saver.

I was counting the number of firearms I have and realized it is too many to count which means it will be of little help on Z-Day unless I plan to arm my county. I would stick with the important three, Kimber 1911, Mossberg 12 gauge, and Bushmaster AR-15. The rest are useless or a fad. WTF am I going to do with a Derringer on Z-Day?

"Save the last bullet for yourself? That's what I would do."Nope not shooting myself. If it all falls apart and I have 2 minutes notice it will be IV delivery of massive dose of Fentanyl-dead with a smile in seconds. I once saw a car that a friend had been sitting in when he decided to blow his S&W .357mag and it was worse than anything I had seen in combat. The smell was atrocious and there were pieces of brain and skin seared to the headrest. Yeah I know boom and it’s over but I’m going to go the girly-man way and OD. Do you find this valuable? |

To quote one of my favorite movies, Serenity: Mal: "Jayne, how many weapons you plannin' on takin'? You only got the two arms." Jayne: "Well I'm just excitable as to choice, like to have my options open."Two good points. First, you can only carry so many weapons on your back, and most likely can only use one at a time. But on the other hand, if you have the ability to take them with you or if you are staying where they are at, it is a good idea to have at least one of everything, and maybe two of some things as backup. Also if you have a few spares, you can toss one to a neighbor or friend if they are unarmed. Do you find this valuable? |
