Yet Another DIY Timed Fuse

I remember gathering a useful tip from an old WWII flick, if you take light a cigarette & fold it into a pack of matches, the cigarette will burn down slowly into the matchbook, causing it to light whatever else you have it tucked into.

I know it seems kind of a waste, but if you scavenge up some paper matchbooks & smokes, you could set a roughly 3 minute timer (adjusted by how low you fold in the cigarette into the flap) on anything that can be lit by flame.

Used to work, and very well.

However most US made cigarettes nowadays are made with a chemical known as FSC (Fire Safe something or other) which causes the cigarette to self-extinguish after a minute or so if it is not being smoked.

This is added so that people who fall asleep with lit cigarettes do not burn their houses down and the like (although it doesn't stop you from putting a real nasty burn in the carpet).

There is the wiki link for FSC, looks like some but not all states have mandated them, along with Canada.

i think that you can do the same with insences. if you dont know what insences are, they are long sticks of diffrent coloured material that are ment to be charred, like a ciggarette. they will not go out over time, and can easily light a match. they can be bought from any cultural store, or if thats not near you, food basics and no frills. and if you cant find them, but find something close to the description, smell them. insences are burned for the smell that it releases. the thought of using a cigarrette for a time delay fuse, its a good idea. Would a candle do the same as the cigarette? Do you find this valuable?

Try telling that to the half a pack a day that burns up in the ash tray when I can't get back to them. They get mighty nasty when the filter starts to burn.

Not sure about the candle, the wax might accidentally douse the fuse, or insulate it from ignition. Although the incense idea is a good one, especially the cone type, since it's fairly compact. put a match under it, heck, you might even be able to embed the match head in the bottom of the cone, if you are careful enough. not all cigs have the compound, but a lot of them do, and as the years progress on they are starting to become a trend among cigarette makers.
