"Sword & Machete 101" complete.... thoughts?
Apr 1 2009, 7:11 PM EDT
Feedback? Thoughts?I've made it clear about the swords versus guns thing but just because I prefer and suggest the use of guns does not mean I don't have classical training on the use of swords. I've been a free study in the ARMA for some time and only recently began actually training in it. I've also recently joined the SCA and that's an excellent practical outlet for my ARMA knowledge. That should be enough to start with. Everything in the article applies to machete but a sword is better at it. I also didn't touch katana because frankly, I don't know anything about the use of or techniques, and I feel no cultural connection to Asian weapons. I'll write up an attach a Sword Maintenance 101 as well, if there is interest. Do you find this valuable?

just nitpicks.A welded on tang is not a problem, what is the problem is the kind of tang in conjunction with a bad welding job, a rat tail with a crap weld = wall hanger, wile a push tang with a forge weld = battle ready. also the light acids from your hands can not only ruin the finish but actually pit the blade. and now a suggestion, for the training part the addition of a link to SBGs introductory Western swordsmanship PDF/E-Book might be nice - can be found here http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com/support-files/trueswordsman.pdf Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks for finally making an unbiased, clear cut observation on swords. Hopefully, this will shut up some of the annoying twelve year olds who insist that their toy sword will totally cut off a zombie's head.

Sabers will be next, though its not my specialty since its relatively modern (in terms of swords) it should be easy to find information on.

"Sabers will be next, though its not my specialty since its relatively modern (in terms of swords) it should be easy to find information on."just make sure you include the types of guards, and blades, and it wont really matter as there very simple to use. Do you find this valuable? |

Do you mean guards as in the fencing verb for defense? Or do you mean hilt? If you mean the latter I'll have to pass because I simply don't know that much. At that point I'd feel bad if I left out exceptions, and frankly I've no desire to write an entire volume on sabres.I will write a bit on usage as well, as you're right - that part will be pretty easy as I'm not a classically trained fencer. They're actually the most difficult fencing weapon to use well, or so I've been told. Cutting with them is pretty easy though as they're typically well shaped for it... except for the patton, which shouldn't really be called a saber, but a rapier. Do you find this valuable? |

I'd be interested in assisting by sharing some gained (and perhaps researched) knowledge of the katana - or should I add my own article?

Be my guest - I'll be honest, I lack the knowledge on the Japanese swords. I'm trained in the opposite direction:)

As is Dead Rising, fictional, but what a great game. Nothing like removing limbs with a big ass sheet of plywood.
