Of the various zombie types, the 28 Days ones are unrealistic, mainly because of the infection time. Even the most virulent strains of ebola take 6 hours to show symptoms, and that is on people with weakened immune systems. An infection/symptom time of seconds is unachievable. That said, I agree that anything resembling Solanum will most likely be man-made, or a naturally occuring virus/bacteria/parasite altered and enhanced in a lab. Your theory that the zombies would retain their memories is possible, something similar to Warren Ellis' "Blackgas". This suggests that the infection strips away the superego and the ego leaving nothing but the base desires to kill, fuck and feed. Eventually the hunger is the only factor. The idea that they would be agreeing with the infection, possibly being given a different outlook on the world is also similar to David Moody's "Hater", and is possibly the closest idea to a Non-Zombie Zombie. Where and how do I sign up for that? I will have to run away before the whole eating thing. Ever see the movie (this was a good one) Zombie strippers? Hey there is probably classified virus's that we don't know about I am sure there is. I am sure there so unrealistic too. Virus that burns a hole through your arm in less than half a second could be possible.

Necro, check out Blackgas 1 and 2. Although it's your decision as to whether almost certain death would be worth it :)Andy, necrotising fascitis is the closest so far, and that takes a few weeks. Half a second, you are looking at either a gallon of pure acid, bullets, or a Bond-style frikkin' laser beam. Do you find this valuable? |

How about meningitis? That can kill in less than 24 hours. What if the virus was a cross between meningitis, rabies and let’s just say…. oh Varicella (chicken pox)? That would make it highly contagious, fast acting and effecting the brain on several different levels.Meh, ~Ironback Do you find this valuable? |

I think what Pa was referring to was the fact that in the movie, the dad takes a drop of blood to the eye, and the virus incubates and spreads through his entire body, causing the change in like two seconds. Like before the blood could even travel through his body. It was obviously Hollywood, but the rest of it is actually frighteningly down to earth. If anything, it sounds like a virulent strand of rabies.

Iron:- Meningitis, bacterial infection, yes it can kill within 18 hours, but usually only small children, with, yep, weakened immune systems. Rabies, incubation of the virus is usually a few months. Varicella, about two weeks. My point is that the infection/symptom time is completely out of whack with reality. The closest substances that can have a short term effect are poisons that kill outright eg. arsenic, and even then thats because it overloads the heart and restricts breathing. Now the symptoms of infection can easily be mapped out to resemble any of the zombie types, and I can buy that a rabies-variant could be mutated to become the Solanum of the future. What I can't buy is a virus, bacteria or parasite that takes over or compromises your Central Nervous System in seconds. 18 hours, yes. Not 18 seconds. Virii need time to replicate, bacteria need time to multiply. Parasites need to travel to the organ of their choice and set up shop. Tick tock. Do you find this valuable? |

I'm agreeing with you, ti is physically impossible just for the fact that it takes more than eighteen seconds for blood to enter your eye and travel throughout your entire body, as well as break down most of your brain's functions, and wipe away all memories and civilized behaviors. That part of the Rage virus is truly Hollywood but the rest really isn't.

Okay...How about VX gas? It's man made and has an almost immediate effect on the human body. Have any of you been through any Nuclear, Biological or Chemical warfare training? The virus in 28DL was a bio weapon. If you're bored and have some time on your hands try to find out all that you can about the Edgewood Arsenal located adjacent to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. As a side note: Chicken Pox can kill an adult male w/i 24 hours. you can read more about this, and more facts, at the Center for Communicable Diseases. Knowledge is power! ~Ironback Do you find this valuable? |

VX gas is a poison, chemical. Like arsenic, it has an immediate effect, but it kills.Chicken pox can kill within 24 hours OF FIRST SYMPTOM. But the infection to symptom time is still about two weeks. This is because the virus is ingested into the body in a miniscule amount, and it takes time to replicate itself to a noticeable level. The rate of replication (and corresonding serverity of infection) is determined by how the immune system copes with the virus. 28DL virus effects are possible, even probable, whether bio-engineered or naturally occuring. But the infection/symptom time is way off. The only plausible construct that would allow for an almost instant infection/symptom time would be a parasite. They are more evolved, so a single organism would be capable of these effects, if it was able to tie itself into either the brain or central nervous system (most likely the spinal cord). But anything like that would be more visible, and that goes onto the "alien controlling human" section, which is a whole other page. Do you find this valuable? |

That's true, chickenpox has an incubation time of up to two weeks. And does VX kill in the two seconds it takes the guy in 28DL to transform from dad to zed?And PA, your parasite sounds like the Las Plagas from Resident Evil 4 (the game series) Do you find this valuable? |

Just looked up Black Gas and I promise if I see black ooze I will skip the forplay (SP?) Six figure education and I don't know how to spell forplay or fourplay too late to look it up and care. Either way black ooze and it's a hit and run.

Some mutated form of rabies is the only possible way to make real zombies. Even then they would not be true zombies as we know them. Rabies is almost 100% fatal so given enough time all the zombies would die.The 28 days later thing was a joke. You can't make a virus by strapping down some apes and forcing them to watch violent acts on monitors. There I go again. Trying to use logic when talking about zombies. I quit now. I wouldn't say the only way. There are 3 current parasites that could evolve and do the job. Other than rabies, ebola is a contender in the virus area.To me, a zombie by definition is someone who was killed by the infection, then their corpse was animated by it. Anyone else is not a zombie, just a very ill human being. You gotta die if you want to be called Zack. Do you find this valuable? |

Yeah, any virus could mutate into a zombie virus, it's all a matter of chance. And the apes were injected with a virus, that's how the chick turned after it bit her.

"Money. Looks. Power. A huge plus in any one column will offset deficits in the other two :)"Thanks for trying to cheer me up. Please last time I mentioned a few cars I owned I had someone here screaming, I was a liar. I didn't realize people would actually pretended to be Political Science professors. If I was going to make up a profession I would pick something far more exciting, maybe a fireman. Money w/out being a dick I will say I will be paying more taxes if Obama puts his tax plan in place but remember wife is attorney. Actually that just doubles the amount we will be paying. Power-I have tenure so I am pretty much untouchable (academic super hero). The gut isn't that bad a perfect 35 but no one makes odd sized pants so it's 36 but as I said I am married basically a zed myself. My life consists of work, children's soccer practice, whinny students, kiss ass TA's and constantly trying to remain academically relevant by publishing something. As I said, I am pretty much undead now so if 13 is around and there is no outward decay or smell I'm going for it. Do you find this valuable? |
