I agree they suck in the long term but a truck would help for getting and transporting supplies to build fortification. I can confidently say only an idiot would go on foot to get building supplies for a base.

Once the gas runs out or goes bad, other things will be needed but that's saying we all survive that long. Also, the idea of every road being clogged may not be true. The real situation may be that martial law and panic will keep people indoors with their families, glued to the TV until their final breath.

It won't be the roads being clogged with other cars, it will be zombies. You won't be able to avoid them all. That means you will end up hitting some. Ever hit a deer? Even a small deer can cause a lot of damage and stop your car. Any car/truck/whatever will need heavy reinforcement in the front end to survive. All it takes is a single finger bone going through your radiator to end your joy ride.Building a fort/base is nearly out of the question when Z day happens. It would require large amounts of people and materials to build such a thing. Even if you are out in the boonies somewhere and there are few zeds around you still have to travel in order to get those supplies. That will likely mean running into zed. Not all roads will be Z-accessible. Look at the highways for example. Guardrails and concrete barriers line them, and around me most areas have actual walls of some sort, both for noise reduction and for keeping the road seperated from the deer herds, which are pretty bad around where I live.

Take a house with a front and back yard for instance...dig a trench and pile all the dirt on the inside. Reinforce with sticks and line the bottom with pungee spikes and you have a formidable defense. Need a gate? Cut down a tree and drag it where you need it, and then just trim a few branches. Need barricade materials? When you destroy the stairs, take your time and you all of those boards. People seem to think a fortress would require materials that need to be hauled to the location. Why? Use the natural resources first. It will save time and energy, both of which are critical to survival. Do you find this valuable? |

Could you mount a gun or something on a back of a pickup truck?

"Could you mount a gun or something on a back of a pickup truck?"To what end? You can't really aim when you are bowling along at 30mph. You need to conserve ammo. The reason the armed forces have large guns on mounts is because those guns are really, really heavy. It makes more sense to use the vehicle as a form of mobile gun turret. But they are transporting their turret into battle. What gun would you mount? Anything you reasonably own doesn't warrant mounting. Anything worth mounting you can't realistically get. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Well, you could very well get two semi-auto rifles and mount them on either side of a camera tripod bolted down to the bed of a truck, and make them removable from the tripod so they can be used in smaller spaces and such. (ar- class rifles for example?) Idunno, just a thought.

Bullet proofed humvee, converted for biodeisel. Impenetrable to zeds, handles almost any terrain, and you can raid grocery stores and restaurants for fuel or just make your own. Plus, abandoned military vehicles could be spare parts.
