1)Get into shape, stressing cardiovascular.

2)Buy gun (other topics/threads cover this). Buy sling/holster for gun. Buy ammo for gun. Buy cleaning kit for gun. Practice with gun.

3)Buy good boots, backpack, jeans and belt. Rainjacket and seasonal gear are good ideas.

4)Buy map, compass, and learn to use them.

5) Stockpile food/water and gear to procure more of each.

6) Pray to god that you don't have to use any of it!

There are lots of other little amenities that you can add on, but getting the gear together is the big one. Gear doesn't mean shit if you're in bad shape and it's probably a good idea to burn off the excess fat and learn to run. Being in shape is everything and much more important than weapons.

True enough Black Knight. You missed a few things though.

Know where you'll go, with whom you'll go, and which route you'll take to get there.

Always plan backups. As Murphy's Law states, "Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong."

Stock up on non-perishable foods. And a can opener. You don't wanna die from a stupid mistake.

Bring metal scraps, springs, wires, heavy/sharp miscelanious objects, etc. to make traps, alerts, and other useful things

Flares, flashlihts, batteries, matches, lamp oil, lamp

Not all of these things are requirements, believe it or not. You may have to fly solo. Routes will need revision, depending upon "Zack per sq. km" and obstructions. The more food you stockpile, the more likely you are to overpack and weigh yourself down. No more than 1 week of food/person carried by each person. Can opener? Do y'all know how to use the can opener on a swiss army knife? Hell everyone should already have a good swiss army knife (get the good ones, not the junk). Scrap metal and such is nice if you have a horse drawn trolley but carrying it around, with your weapon and gear could get kinda cumbersome and heavy, and would definitely slow you down or give you tetanus.

On the plus side, flares and lights, batteries, matches, and flammable liquid are all essentials.

I wasn't necessarily talking about travel. I wasalso talking about long term defense. I mean yeah. Traveling with srap metal and junk is completely pointless. Maybe a few lightweight things like tin foil, candy wrappers, an other things (Candy wrappers can actually start fres, beleive it or not). But if you're already in you defended bunker, then strt to travel around by day (Not night. They're not hindered by sight. Why should you be?) and scavenge random things from the immediate surroundings.

Rubber for tires is actually pretty strong. And the metal from the hubcaps and spokes and everything could be used to make traps or to brace your blockades. If any of you have seen the old show "Junkyard Wars" then you can get a really good idea of what you can make with random crap. Also watch Survivor Man to learn a couple reall useful thins.
