A dream of a weapon on a dream of a vehicle
Jun 1 2009, 11:19 PM EDT
Ok....I saw a 3 page argument (you seen it to) about artillery vs mounted machine guns, well I have 2 cents. If we had the mobility and supplies enough to chose (20 years after, we have reorganized and what not). The Dillon minigun, found on many Blackhawks that are in our nations inventory, mounted on a heavy assault vehicle. Possibly something like a chevy gladiator van with a ramming block in front secured windows and the roof section of a humvee with the proper mounting for the weapon, covered by 2 off road dune buggies with 4 seats and a mounted m249 for gathering supplies in the abandoned cities of the world.

Not so much getting the weapon on, but its weight and the ammo's weight will probably blow out the suspension in a matter of minutes. And unless you pick something with a better motor or swap in a turbo diesel you won't have the torque to get anywhere. Also, do you know how to do all of that stuff? Do you find this valuable? |

my chevy van can haul a 4 horse trailer full o horses, a weeks worth of camping supplies for me and ma fam, and a weeks worth of food and hay (bout 150 pounds of feed and 50 pounds of hay). I think it would be feasible

That's pulling. You're describing an attachment to the roof, which would add weight directly to the vehicle.

The Dillon Minigun weighs in at around 60 to 70 lbs. It uses 7.62 X 51 rounds (these are non-rimmed and shorter, not the same round for ARs) The largest magazine capacity is 4500 rounds, and at a maximum fire rate of 4000 rounds per minute, you'd be running out of ammo pretty quick. I think a regular mounted machine gun would be better.

lol hitman has the best point, and stryker is right too but I just thought it would be hilarious to pull up to a horde and just chop them down like reeds on the river bank. a dual mount of m249. I believe that is the one that the fires the standard .223 that the m16 fires as well. this would be good as it gives you ammo compatibility if you have managed to find the aforementioned m16's, but then again m249's aren't really heavy mounted machine guns. but for inu dude, when the center of the weight you are adding to a chevy k-frame series vehicle is place over the rear axles it actually give's a greater hauling capacity not a smaller one, and with the standard 350 in mine you wouldn't have any trouble going Do you find this valuable? |

"The problem is the suspension blowing out on the vehicle."have you ever worked on any thing based off a k frame? if not hush, even according to some one besides me the dillon minigun only weighs 60--70 *I estimated closer to 150-200* and the ammo would come in under 800 pounds...I'd have to check the manual but I belive I can load close to 1300 pounds in the van *even with 2 blown shock absorbers and a worn out ball joint* Do you find this valuable? |

Try driving on that for thousands of miles. Still, I think the only big problem would be aiming the thing with any accuracy.

I could load my K3500 GMC up with two dirtbikes in the bed, two on a trailer, and enough food and beer for the 4 guys in the cab. Then go hauling ass across the desert (no paved roads there) to find a nice secluded spot to get drunk and blow stuff up and I never had suspension problems. (I did have air bag helper springs on the rear though) I say a mounted minigun would be great for select things, like hunting zombie hordes once you have a base of operations, but as for bugging out and staying mobile, it would just go though ammo too fast. Very nice. That would be a great MG mount. Actually the van would be good too, I didn't realize that the Dillon only weighed a few hundred pounds, compared to what most of them weigh in at. I still think against zombies the SAW or a Browning .30 or .50 cal would be better, but against raiders the minigun would be terrifying.

"Single, full floating 14 bolt rear end. 8" lift. 35" tires. "that is an impressive set up lol, pretty soon i'm gonna be putting a 4inch lift on the van up grade the shocks, coil springs, and get heavy duty A frames for the front, in an attempt to stiffen the handling. Also wanna look into 4 wheel drive. I like the van because it becomes an enclosed troop or buddy carrier if a welder with a good imagination and the right material gets a hold of it but that truck would be even better with the right camper shell on it lol Do you find this valuable? |

I definitely wouldn't go any taller than 8. If I could do it over I'd probably do 6. I had an 83 Ford E350 van with a 4 inch lift. It was pretty beastly but even with a 351 V8 it couldn't get out of its own way.
