Summer Survival issue 6
Jun 13 2009, 7:00 PM EDT
Skin Cancer is caused by excess exposure to the sun's UV rays. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be about 10,850 deaths from skin cancer in 2007 – 8,110 from melanoma and 2,740 from other skin cancers. Now the question for you this week is how can you avoid skin cancer in a post apocalyptic world? (http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/Summer+Survival/ ) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Whilst the obvious one is to avoid the sun, typical post-apocalyptica usually has people plowing the fields. Kind of huge exposure, working outdoors from dawn to dusk.I think the best thing will be covering up as best you can, hat, headscarf, etc. Then avoiding the peak hours, from 11-2. Break for lunch, maybe sleep an hour. But maybe the rates of skin cancer will go down once everyone is eating organic food and no cars are running around. That would be the worst thing. Hippies might prove to be right. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"stay hydrated and if i feel light headed sit in the shade a sip cool water. standard first aid really."Even if you don't have heat stroke, it's going to be mighty uncomfortable. Make sure those clothes are thin and light-colored. Do you find this valuable? |

Yup. Light colored, loose-fitting clothing is the way to go. Keep the head covered, and stay hydrated. The most productive working hours are early morning and late afternoon, coincidentally also the peak hours for UV exposure. keep that in mind. Just because the day begins and ends a little cooler doesn't make the sun any less dangerous. Keep the clothes on until it's dark out. Do you find this valuable? |

Also a sweat wicking material for under gametes, such as under armor. Cause hypothermia is still a problem in the summer aswell. Gett sweaty and enter a area with a lot of cool wind or some place that is just cold and you could have a bigger problem.

During the hottest months when I did construction work I tucked a damp cloth under the back of my hat, hanging over my neck. Helped a lot.

Look at the clothes they wear in the Middle East for outdoor work. They have had centuries to perfect clothing to survive in a high UV areas.http://www.raqs.co.nz/me/clothing.html http://www.island.net/~doerksen/basics.html http://www.scribd.com/doc/40197/Middle-Eastern-Clothing-Practical-Primer Notice the trend, loose fitting and full body coverage. The loose fit allows air to flow and cool you off, the coverage keeps UV rays from the skin. Also, linen, cotton, and wool fabrics to carry sweat away from the skin, again the loose fit allows it to dry and cool the body instead of just evaporating into the air. Do you find this valuable? |

I'm probably already there. I've spent most of my life outdoors and in the sun with no real protection. I've got that nice tanned leather look complete with wrincles. Changing my ways post-z would be pretty much pointless. If I'm too dumb to cover up now I probably won't even consider it after the world goes to hell. When all you know has changed completely you won't worry about things like this. You'll smoke that cigerette and eat that catfish from the river that you wouldn't touch post-z. You won't worry about the cancer warning on the can of bug spray if your getting eaten alive by mosqitos. When your vegetable garden is getting ripped to shreds by pests you'll not give a hang if you have organic food or not. You'll spray them with pesticide or loose all your hard work and go hungry. I respect where your going with this and everybody looks at things differently so I shouldn't be so critical. I've enjoyed all the Summer Survival questions and for many people this will be an issue. I'd probably do everything to keep my kids skin protected with the methods other contributors have mentioned but as far as myself? If this goes down I doubt I'll die an old man asleep in my bed, my main concern would be to make sure the next generation has a chance. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I would say heat stroke or heat exhaustion would be more dangerous that cancer in a post apoclyptic world because of the scarcity of water. Cancer takes a long time to circulate through your body before you actually die. But keeping in the shade and working a minimum amount of hours is ideal Do you find this valuable? |

I guess the other thing to do is to SLOWLY and SAFELY get a tan. That's your bodies natural protection against UV. Why do you think Swedish people are so pale, and African people so dark? The melanin requirements of the two areas are completely different. More sun = more melanin. If you build up your tan too quickly, you burn because you absorb more UV radiation than your body can handle, and that burn is your skin quietly cooking for the next eight or ten hours. In the UK it is called British Lobster Pink. You see it on flights returning from Spain this time of year. All BLP, no brown. Two weeks later it has faded and they are back to our natural pale blue. Once you have a good tan though, you are protected from most of the harm. So Timber has nothing to worry about really, provided he isn't burning. That tanned leather is his own best protection. And when he dies, someone can use him for a car seat :) Do you find this valuable? |

I'm talking about those indegenous people who have been there thousands of years, in both Sweden and Africa. Air travel has fucked Darwin right up. Do you find this valuable? |
