I have several made by different manufacturers (Gerber, Cold Steel, Columbia, Ozark Trails, etc) Easiest one to find at local sporting goods stores and best to buy (in my opinion) is the Gerber 15" machete. Second best and something you'll probably have to order is one from Cold Steel. Cold Steel has machetes in several styles and usually a 16-ish" (long) version and a 12" (short) version of them. I have a 12" Barong version I like. adding a link for a good page http://www.888knivesrus.com/category/machete_s/ Do you find this valuable? |

d'Capitan looks like a badass piece, but that is an unbelievable high price for a machete. 320 bucks!! But that’s what you can expect when you buy a custom blade. There are many companies that offer very high quality machetes for a much cheaper price. If that specific design of the captain is what intrigues you, I’m sure you can take a cheaper one to professional grinder to give it that aggressive look you desire. Myself, id go with 17' Kukri or a 24' Latin. Do you find this valuable? |

You know another member asked about different weapon on the same website.. I think either this person is trying to advertise the website by relaying it asking which one would be a good machete..Just go to military surplus and buy a machete there or a woodsman pal. Edit: Here is that thread. http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/thread/2881908/Machetes Do you find this valuable? |

Yeah, when I first looked at that website, it looked very suspicious. Sure, they look pretty cool, but I feel like they would be delivered by "Zach", with bleached and spiked hair, black eyeliner, and some t-shirt with a death-metal band name on it.

For machete's I'd check a local hardware store and whenever possible, avoid stainless steel - though there are a few grades that might be suitable. I can't remember the name but there's a new japanese stainless that is perfect for machetes and knives and is stainless... But it's lab made and pricy.

That page - zombie tools - made me wonder: what would a sword, that has been designed exclusively to kill zombies (decapitate or slice a skull) would look like? Also, what would be a good substitute for "human head" for practicing? Do you find this valuable? |

"http://www.castlewholesalers.com/MICHIGAN-7990-18-Machete-withSheath.htmlyeah stake your life on a $4 blade. Several manufacturers make a solid line of machetes. Gerber has some good ones, Cold steel has a large line of them, Ka-Bar has a few bolo shaped ones. The shape is going to dictate alot of the blade's cutting ability, don't use a thin latin style if you are going to try to cut down trees, don't use a Gurkha shape to slice vines or weeds. Find out what you are planning on using it for, and go from there. Do you find this valuable? |

"yeah stake your life on a $4 blade. You should try this machete out before knocking it; price snobbery isn't wise. I'd stack it up against any of the $20 Cold Steel machete line any day of the week. High carbon steel, I'm thinking its 1040 or 1055. It's made by the Tekton line of Michigan Industrial Tools and comes with a lifetime warranty. The sheath this thing comes in is worth more than 4 bucks too. Do you find this valuable? |

Look into a Kukri. I own a few and love them. Always look for a solid blade that runs through the handle and try to get the powdercoated black ones that smith and wesson and Cold steel sell. Ive had a lot of rusting problems with non blackened versions, IE the one im holding in my avatar

Smith and Wesson blades are junk. I'll never purchase another blade by S&W. Period. Twice bitten by their crap knives before, never again. They don't sharpen well, they don't hold an edge well, their folding knives don't lock up well... They might have some nice stuff out there but I'll never know because I'm not ever purchasing a blade from them again. Nope. I've been burned too many times. Caveat Emptor. If you're having problems with rusting on your unfinished knives or blades, you're not taking care of it correctly - it's not being cleaned or lubricated correctly or you're leaving it in a high humidity environment for too long. To remove the rust, get some "Break Free CLP" from Walmart and a little bit of 0000 grade steel wool; it should come right off with a little bit of elbow grease. When storing your blade, don't EVER leave it in a leather sheath for long periods of time. Make sure to leave a light film of oil on your blade at all times. It should be cleaned and lubed at least once a month, more if you live in Louisiana, Vietnam, or any other frequently humid area. Something you can do to help take care of it is to purchase a silicon impregnated gun cloth for a few bucks (also at Walmart) and wipe it down every time you handle it. Touching the blade should be considered a no-no unless you intend to clean it shortly thereafter. If you use the blade to prepare food, don't use CLP or a silicon cloth to clean/preserve it; use hot, soapy water to clean and lard or bacon grease to protect it. This will keep it from rusting and extend the life of the blade considerably. I don't mean to sound like I'm a know it all or hounding you, I've just learned all of this the hard way in the past! Yea, i take pretty good care of my blades, and being military i have a ton of CLP even though i dont like the stuff. I prefer getting aircraft grade PLS from work. I'm in the North Carolina marshland and humidity is deffinetly a factor here, and i can atribute one rusty blade to being pressed against an unfinished aluminum cabinet (dissimilar metals)

The designation high carbon indicates a steel with at least .5% carbon content. I'm going to call them in the morning to speak with them about the steel and warranty. Do you find this valuable? |
